Life of the Clinician

The autobiography of one of America's most important gastroenterologists. Michael Lepore [1910-2000] was a pioneer in the field of gastroenterology. He was a member of one of the first graduating classes of the University of Rochester Medical School, and went on to a distinguished career at Columbia University, New York University, and St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of New York. This autobiography tells of his experiences as an Italian-American who overcame prejudices to become the personal physician to such notablesas Greta Garbo and President Herbert Hoover. His story is witty and cleverly written, and details the way the medical profession changed from the Great Depression to the late 1990s. Michael Lepore was an alumnus of Duke University Medical School and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and was the Director, Gastroenterology Section, Departments of Medicine and Surgery Emeritus, St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of New York.

Historians of the postwar transformation of science have focused largely on the physical sciences, especially the relation of science to the military funding agencies. In Shaping Biology, Toby A. Appel brings attention to the National Science Foundation and federal patronage of the biological sciences. Scientists by training, NSF biologists hoped in the 1950s that the new agency would become the federal government's chief patron for basic research in biology, the only agency to fund the entire range of biology—from molecules to natural history museums—for its own sake. Appel traces how this vision emerged and developed over the next two and a half decades, from the activities of NSF's Di...

Biomechanics of Skeletal Muscles

Richly illustrated and presented in clear, concise language, Biomechanics of Skeletal Muscles is an essential resource for those seeking advanced knowledge of muscle biomechanics. Written by leading experts Vladimir Zatsiorsky and Boris Prilutsky, the text is one of the few to look at muscle biomechanics in its entirety—from muscle fibers to muscle coordination—making it a unique contribution to the field. Using a blend of experimental evidence and mechanical models, Biomechanics of Skeletal Muscles provides an explanation of whole muscle biomechanics at work in the body in motion. The book first addresses the mechanical behavior of single muscles—from the sarcomere level up to the ent...

This book describes a half century of research on cellular membrane transport and on metabolic energy capture and utilization. During this time-which begins in the late 1930s-the effort and imagination of various scientists overthrew reigning formulations, created novel explanatory models, and unified previously distinct experimental fields. My primary goal is to display the course of that research, showing how new experiments defined novel entities and processes, and how an encompassing field, bioenergetics, then emerged. A secondary goal is to present examples of mainstream biological research that illustrate how experimental results-seen as refutations, confirmations, and elabora tions-ca...
