The Development of Catalysis

This book gradually brings the reader, through illustrations of the most crucial discoveries, into the modern world of chemical catalysis. Readers and experts will better understand the enormous influence that catalysis has given to the development of modern societies. • Highlights the field's onset up to its modern days, covering the life and achievements of luminaries of the catalytic era • Appeals to general audience in interpretation and analysis, but preserves the precision and clarity of a scientific approach • Fills the gap in publications that cover the history of specific catalytic processes

Metallocene Catalyzed Polymers

It has been estimated that within just ten years, over half of all polyolefins will be made by using metallocene catalysts. This ground-breaking volume from PDL brings togetherùfor the first timeùwork from dozens of world-renowned experts on the subject. Fifty chapters of peer-reviewed content offer insights into applications in automotive components, food packaging, insulating films, non-woven fabrics and medical markets, among others.

Organometallic Catalysts and Olefin Polymerization

"Catalysis is more art than science", probably all of you have heard and even used this expression. Whether it is true or not, it alludes to the experience that new catalysts are hard to find, and near impossible to predict. Hard work and a lifetime of experience is invaluable. However, a keen mind might give insight into where to search, but not necessarily about where to find the answers. Historically, "quantum leaps" have often arisen from serendipity - we all know the story about the nickel-contaminated reactor that triggered further research towards the first coordination catalyst for ethene polymerization. Taking advan tage of this event, Karl Ziegler became the first chemist to earn both a Nobel prize and a fortune for the same invention. A broken NMR tube helped Walter Kaminsky discover the effect of high concentrations of methylaluminoxanes as co catalysts for metallocenes. When air reacted with the concentrated trim ethyl aluminum solution, sufficient amounts of methylaluminoxanes were formed, and the lazy catalyst dormant in the NMR tube suddenly became sensationally active. Ziegler and Kaminsky were lucky and had the genius needed to take advantage of their luck.

Since 1948, Advances in Catalysis has filled the gap between the papers that report on and the textbooks that teach in the diverse areas of catalysis research. The editors of and contributors to Advances in Catalysis are dedicated to recording progress in this area. Advances in Catalysis, Volume 46 builds foundations of fundamental understanding at the atomic and molecular scales in support of technologically important catalytic processes. The first tow chapters forge links between molecular (homogeneous) catalysis and catalysis occurring analogously-and sometimes more successfully-on surfaces. The following three chapters are concerned with advances in classical surface catlysis building on concepts of reaction kinetics and surface characterization.

Students contemplating careers in chemistry, whether in research, practice, or academia, obviously need a solid grounding in proper research methodology, reasoning, and analysis. However, there are few resources available that efficiently and effectively introduce these concepts and techniques and inspire students to undertake advanced research, particularly in the area of catalysis. Catalysis: Principles and Applications evolved out of a special, resoundingly successful short course for graduate students interested in catalysis. It covers nearly the entire gamut of the subject, from its fundamentals to its modern, applied aspects. The chapters were contributed by catalysis specialists from ...
