'Fans of Alexander McCall Smith will love Scotty Elliott's Sibanda series. . . This collection of short stories explores the ‘survival of the fittest’ in the hardship and poverty of a remote village in Matabeleland. Bongani Sibanda draws his characters and their situations with a sardonic eye and caustic humour. Sibanda satirises churches which enrich their leaders with the tithes of the poor, and draws our attention to self-proclaimed pastors who use the ‘gospel of nationalism and patriotism’ to persuade their congregants to desist from supporting opposition politics. The church is also a source of the villagers’ weekly entertainment, with its cleansing ceremonies and the interrogation of witches: belief has a place, but so too does theatre. Patriarchy, family hierarchies, and the traditional position of women and children, all fall under Sibanda’s wry but compassionate scrutiny. We feel an intimacy with the villagers as we learn about how they cope: with no self-pity, little ambition, but a fierce determination to survive.

When Freedom Came

The hero of the book, Godknows (an unusual but fairly common name in Zimbabwe) Kuzvida, is a young black African in Southern Rhodesia (Rhodesia since 1965). Like many other young blacks, he finds that his educational prospects after ‘ordinary’ levels are bleak. By chance, he gets the opportunity to go to the United Kingdom to further his education fully expecting to come back to a still racially segregated Rhodesia and get himself a job. This starts him on an adventure of discovery as he, for the first time, realises that the rest of the world is different from what he had always considered “normal”. While he is away, independence comes to Zimbabwe, and he returns home to a country t...

The beauty of love was in the air. I felt its beat thundering, burning and melting into my heart with a startling ferocity. It drew my heart to her heart and gave birth to a new fusion. In my dreams and thoughts, it murmured those rhythms of everlasting togetherness whose fire is fearless. I perched on its wings and wheels when I was far from her, and her nearness sang in full swing, in praise of a warmth that conquers the vagaries of her weather, her seasons and reasons. In her absence, I was haunted by a certain addictive hunger. I desired to be completed and healed by her closeness. There was an emptiness I could not bear or escape from. In my heart I banished the cyclicity with which our heated arguments occurred. Such contentions and shouts were consigned to the dustbin of past times. I was convinced that the road ahead had no blind turns or sharp humps.

Garfield Todd: The End of the Liberal Dream in Rhodesia

Against the backdrop of a politically approved view that Europeans did little to further the Zimbabwean nationalist freedom movements before Independence in 1980, this book will help to nail that misconception against a wall. The story of Garfield Todd and his various roles as Christian missionary, liberal prime minister of southern Rhodesia, high-profile opponent of UDI and its architect Ian Smith from 1965 to 1980, will surely be an eye-opener for many young people in central and southern Africa, who may never have heard of this great man who spent his life in education and public service. The role of Garfield Todd and some of the people who worked with him has been effectively airbrushed f...
