Self-Efficacy Shapes Modernization
Self-efficacy (SE) is the critical link between environment, culture, institutions, modernization, and development. It enables adaptive learning from environmental stimuli, and fosters agency, cooperation, goal setting, openness, opportunity recognition, and longer-term planning. SE can be regarded as fertilizer for any policy measure. Research amongst smallholder farmers in South Ghana shows that historical return on investment culturally bequeathed investment SE, which largely influences today's farming investment and household income. SE is well malleable and perceptive to intentional promotion.
Canada’s Global Villagers
Established in 1961, the same year as the US Peace Corps, Canadian University Service Overseas (CUSO) became the first Canadian NGO to undertake development work from a secular stance and in a context of rapid decolonization. Drawing on extensive research and interviews, Ruth Compton Brouwer tells the story of a group of young women and men who confronted the complexities of "underdevelopment" in countries such as India and Nigeria and who overcame their initial navet as they sought to fit into their host communities. Later, as returned volunteers, they brought unique skills to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and other development organizations and a new level of global consciousness and cultural diversity to Canadian society.
A Compendium of Regional Perspectives in Communication for Development
This Compendium presents the findings of a series of regional studies, consultations and workshops organised by FAO in preparation for the World Congress on Communication for Development (Rome, October 2007). The compendium serves as a reference document and compares present trends, experiences and challenges in Communication for Development across regions, and projects. It focuses on the applications of communication methods and media, particularly in the field of food security, natural resources management and rural development, with a view for offering new directions for mainstreaming Communication for Development in different regions and for fostering new partnerships.
