Die (Wieder-)Gründung der Universität Erfurt
Die Idee, in Erfurt eine Universität (wieder) zu gründen, entstand aus einer Initiative ostdeutscher Bürger vor und nach der Wende 1989/90. Diese Versuche waren jedoch zum Scheitern verurteilt. Erst die Entschlossenheit der Landesregierung, in der Stadt eine neue, sorgfältig geplante, geisteswissenschaftlich orientierte Reformuniversität einzurichten, hatte Erfolg. Die in Erfurt bestehenden Einrichtungen wurden entweder geschlossen (Medizinische Akademie) oder wie die Pädagogische Hochschule in die Universität integriert; aus dem Philosophisch-Theologischen Studium wurde die (Katholische) Theologische Fakultät. Mit dem angeschlossenen Max-Weber-Kolleg wurde eine damals neuartige Kombination von Forschungs- und Graduiertenkolleg etabliert. Zur Profilbildung trug ein engagiertes Führungstrio unter dem bekannten Wissenschaftspolitiker Peter Glotz als Gründungsrektor bei. Mit dessen Rückzug mussten ambitionierte Reformpläne relativiert und den Thüringer Gegebenheiten angepasst werden. Die Universität Erfurt heute ähnelt nur noch in einigen Bereichen den Konzepten der Gründer.
