This book deals with the ecology of rivers and streams in the Oriental Region, and describes the composition of their unique fauna - especially the diverse array of animals which live on and among the bottom sediments. Dichotomous keys are provided as an aid to the identification of these animals, and the book is illustrated by over 100 pages of line drawings and maps. Special emphasis is given to the impact of human activities on streams and rivers, and the book concludes with a discussion of conservation and management options for these endangered habitats.
Concerns about global biodiversity are rising dramatically, yet we are lagging behind in the most basic prerequisite for its understanding and conservation: the inventory. Insect species may make up five or ten times the number of all other plant and animal species combined, and as such they represent one of the major challenges in biosystematic science. World Catalogue of Insects is an initiative aiming at compiling worldscale, authoritative catalogues of monophyletic insect taxa. We are therefore proud to launch this major series. Volumes will as a minimum contain standard nomenclatoral information on all names pertaining to the taxon treated, including type locality and distribution to the extent this is relevant. This new edition of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera gives a taxonomic overview of the most diverse group of all organisms living in the world-largest biogeographical area. The present volume is an updated edition of the first issue in 2003 but restricted to data published before the year 2000. It contains information about 33,914 taxa (together with synonyms), and increases the number of included species and other taxa by almost 5,000. The volume contains descriptions of 22 new species of New Guinean Exocelina Broun, 1886 with a key to described species of the E. ekari-group. The genus Exocelina is a recently discovered monophyletic group of water beetles of Australian origin and with high level of diversification and endemism throughout the Oriental, Australian, and Pacific Regions. So far it included 94 valid species, most of which occur in New Guinea. Including the newly described species, the extraordinary rich Exoce-lina fauna of the island contains 63 described species and more than 80 additional new species, which are currently under study. The Exocelina ekari-group, with 26 described and approximately 20 undescribed species, is the largest group of the genus. This work aims to define the group morphologically, to provide de-tailed species descriptions with data on their distribution, and, including 49 figures, to illustrate the morphology of the group as properly as possible. The key allows identification of all de-scribed species of the E. ekari-group, and the section ?Habitats? not only provides information on habitat requirements of the species but also useful instructions for their sampling.

This three-volume series represents a comprehensive treatment of the beetles of Australia, a relatively under-studied fauna that includes many unusual and unique lineages found nowhere else on Earth. Volume 2 contains 36 chapters, providing critical information and identification keys to the genera of the Australian beetle families included in suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga, Adephaga and several groups of Polyphaga (Scirtoidea, Hydrophiloidea, Scarabaeoidea, Buprestoidea and Tenebrionidae). Each chapter is richly illustrated in black and white drawings and photographs. The book also includes colour habitus figures for about 1000 Australian beetle genera and subgenera belonging to the families treated in this volume.
