In The Early Dutch Sinologists Koos Kuiper gives a detailed account of the studies and work of the 24 Dutchmen trained as “interpreters” for the Netherlands Indies before 1900. Most began studying at Leiden University, then went to Amoy to study southern Chinese dialects. Their main functions were translating Dutch law into Chinese, advising the courts on Chinese law and checking Chinese accounts books, later also regulating coolie affairs. Actually their services were not always appreciated and there was not enough work for them; later many pursued other careers in the Indies administration or in scholarship. This study also analyses the three dictionaries they compiled. Based on a wealth of primary sources, it gives a fascinating picture of personal cross-cultural contacts.

A deft selection of unpublished and little-known works by F. A. Hayek that will serve to enlighten and enliven debates around the ever-changing face of Western liberalism Across seventeen volumes to date, the University of Chicago Press’s Collected Works of F. A. Hayek series has anthologized the diverse and prolific writings of the Austrian economist synonymous with classical liberalism. Information Security is usually achieved through a mix of technical, organizational and legal measures. These may include the application of cryptography, the hierarchical modeling of organizations in order to assure confidentiality, or the distribution of accountability and responsibility by law, among interested parties. The history of Information Security reaches back to ancient times and starts with the emergence of bureaucracy in administration and warfare. Some aspects, such as the interception of encrypted messages during World War II, have attracted huge attention, whereas other aspects have remained largely uncovered. There has never been any effort to write a comprehensive history....

Good Money, Part II

The second part of this collection presents five articles that lay the foundation for some of the Nobel Prize–winning economists most controversial ideas. The two volumes of Good Money present a comprehensive chronicle of F.A. Hayek’s writings on monetary policy. Together, they offer readers an invaluable reference to some of his most profound thoughts about money. Good Money, Part II: The Standard offers five more of Hayek’s articles that advance his ideas about money. In these essays, Hayek investigates the consequences of the “predicament of composition.” This principle works on the premise that the entire society cannot simultaneously increase liquidity by selling property or services for cash. This analysis led Hayek to make what was perhaps his most controversial proposal: that governments should be denied a monopoly on the coining of money. “One of the great thinkers of our age who . . . revolutionized the world’s intellectual and political life.” —Former President George Herbert Walker Bush

Througout his life Hayek had a profound interest in money and its role within the economy. Money plays a critical part in his 1920s work on the trade cycle, which attempts to integrate capital theory and monetary theory. As late as the 1970s, Hayek was advocating radical reform of the monetary system, suggesting that the supply of money be turned over to private enterprise. This volume, together with Volume Six, Good Money, Part Two, collect all of Hayek's significant writings on money. Together they amply demonstrate both the significance of 'sound money' in Hayek's economic vision, and Hayek's importance as a monetary theorist.
