One of three volumes on topics that arose from a September 1989 conference in Houston on mathematical and computational issues in geophysical fluid and solid mechanics. The nine papers include discussions of waves in partially saturated porous media, wave propagation by step marching, and optimal fi
This book contains articles on maximal regulatory problems, interpolation spaces, multiplicative perturbations of generators, linear and nonlinear evolution equations, integrodifferential equations, dual semigroups, positive semigroups, applications to control theory, and boundary value problems.
Discusses a dozen topics related to mathematical and computational issues in geophysical fluid and solid mechanics, including local grid refinement for reservoir simulation, a method of factoring long z-transform polynomials, and the finite element modelling of surface flow problems. Not a collection of proceedings, but 11 papers on topics that emerged from a September 1989 conference in Houston on mathematical and computational issues in geophysical fluid and solid mechanics. The discussions include a semi-linear heat equation subject to the specification of energy, an analytic

Building on the basic techniques of separation of variables and Fourier series, the book presents the solution of boundary-value problems for basic partial differential equations: the heat equation, wave equation, and Laplace equation, considered in various standard coordinate systems--rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical. Each of the equations is derived in the three-dimensional context; the solutions are organized according to the geometry of the coordinate system, which makes the mathematics especially transparent. Bessel and Legendre functions are studied and used whenever appropriate throughout the text. The notions of steady-state solution of closely related stationary solutions are...
