The Kiss of Death
Chagas' disease has become one of the major public-health problems in Latin America. Current estimates are that sixteen to eighteen million people are infected. It is caused by a flagellate protozoan whose vector is the triatomine or vinchuca bug, locally referred to as the "kissing bug" because of its tendency to lodge on victims' faces during sleep. Although there is no cure for the chronic stage, the disease vectors can be controlled and possibly eliminated through improved hygiene and living conditions. No longer exclusive to Latin America, Chagas' disease is spreading to North America with the migration of infected bugs, hosts, transfusions, transplant organs, and changes in climate. Smart Economy in Smart African Cities
This book highlights the use of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructures in order to develop smart cities and produce smart economies in Africa. It discusses a robust set of concepts, including smart planning, smart infrastructure development, smart economic development, smart environmental sustainability, smart social development, resilience, and smart peace and security in several African cities. The Ixodid Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) of Southern Africa
This is a comprehensive work summarizing the current state of knowledge of the biology of the hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) of Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Maputo Province, Mozambique). It provides an overview of the history of tick research in Southern Africa and the evolution of our knowledge of the ticks’ distribution and biology, as well as the methods used to determine tick distribution, abundance and host preference. The morphologies of most of the tick species known to occur in Southern Africa are described and illustrated, and their distributions are described and mapped in relation to the biomes of the region. The known hosts for each tick species are listed, and the tick’s host preferences are discussed. Information on most species life cycle in the laboratory and the field, and their seasonal occurrence, is summarized.
