The Cross of Sacrifice: Officers Who Died in the Service of British, Indian and East African Regiments and Corps, 1914-1919

A tremendous piece of research, conducted over ten years, in which are listed, in alphabetical order, the names of over 60,000 officers of the British Empire who died during the Great War, including nurses and female aid workers. Based on the CWGC Registers, the information provided includes not only that shown in ‘Officers Died' but also the place of burial or commemoration. The alphabetical listing means that looking up a name does not require prior knowledge of the regiment (as in ‘Officers Died') though this information is given, as well as cross-reference to the relevant page number in ‘Officers Died’.

What he is writing is not precisely art history: it is about pictures, about landscape and about thought. Over the years, he was able to have discussions with many of the thirty or so artists he focuses on, the inspiration for the book having come from his talks with Ben Nicholson; and he has immersed himself in their work, their countryside, their ideas. Because he is a painter himself, and an expert on 2...

Forgotten Past

"Forgotten Past" is the story of Moon Township's initial settlement and its demise during the American Revolution. Reborn after the Treaty of Paris, the settlers gradually restored the remnants of their frontier farms and succeeding generations proceeded to make them self-sufficient. As the nineteenth and twentieth centuries arrived, daily life is revealed in the context of local government, economic transition, social amenities, educational advances and the diversity of religious affiliations.

Institutional Intelligence

We tend to view institutions cynically, but they are essential to human flourishing and thriving communities. Focusing on the non-profit sector, Gordon Smith unpacks the core of institutional intelligence, showing team leaders, directors, executives, board members, and employees how to work effectively within the institutional character of their organizations.
