He was the son of Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston of the United States Army, afterwards General in the Confederate forces, and Henrietta Preston, daughter of General William Preston. His father was at that time in active service in the regular army, and as such liable to constant removals through the exigencies of his military life. His mother died when he was four years old.
