The Enoch-Metatron Tradition

The Enoch-Metatron Tradition

Andrei A. Orlov examines the tradition about the seventh antediluvian patriarch Enoch, tracing its development from its roots in the Mesopotamian lore to the Second Temple apocalyptic texts and later rabbinic and Hekhalot materials where Enoch is often identified as the supreme angel Metatron. The first part of the book explores the imagery of the celestial roles and titles of the seventh antediluvian hero in Mesopotamian, Enochic and Hekhalot materials. The analysis of the celestial roles and titles shows that the transition from the figure of patriarch Enoch to the figure of angel Metatron occurred already in the Second Temple Enochic materials, namely, in 2 (Slavonic) Enoch, a Jewish work, traditionally dated to the first century CE. The second part of the book demonstrates that mediatorial polemics with the traditions of the exalted patriarchs and prophets played an important role in facilitating the transition from Enoch to Metatron in the Second Temple period.

The Great Pyramid--mysteries abound . . . For example: Why was the subterranean chamber apparently abandoned and yet it is larger than the Queen's Chamber and the King's Chamber combined? Why is there a pit in the floor of the subterranean chamber, and why does the narrow passage that snakes south off the subterranean chamber come to a sudden end after 53 feet? Why was sand from the Sinai hidden behind the wall of the horizontal passage to the Queen's Chamber, and why is there a sudden drop in that passage? Why was the Grand Gallery built so large in comparison to the ascending passage, and why are the slots in the ramps of the Grand Gallery empty? Why was the antechamber to the King's Chamber built with both limestone and granite blocks, and what purpose could the so-called Granite Leaf have served? Egyptologists, pyramidologists, and others outside these two camps have attempted to explain such anomalies. Their theories are examined and compared to a new vision that answers not just some of the questions about the Great Pyramid but all of them as revealed in Books Written in Stone: Enoch the Seer, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Last Days.

Eugene Onegin

Vladimir Nabokov's famous and brilliant commentary on Pushkin's Eugene Onegin When Vladimir Nabokov first published his controversial translation of Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin in 1964, the great majority of the edition was taken up by Nabokov’s witty and exhaustive commentary. Presented here in its own volume, the commentary is a unique scholarly masterwork by one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers—a work that Nabokov biographer Brian Boyd calls “the most detailed commentary ever made on” Onegin and “indispensable to all serious students of Pushkin’s masterpiece.” In his commentary, Nabokov seeks to illuminate every possible nuance of this nineteenth-century classic. ...
