From Elections to Democracy
The countries of Central Europe in the first round for admission to the European Union have all established constitutional, electoral democracies and market economies. However, much remains to be done to achieve fully consolidated democratic states. This study documents the weaknesses of public oversight and participation in policymaking in Hungary and Poland, two of the most advanced countries in the region. It discusses five alternative routes to accountability including European Union oversight, constitutional institutions such as presidents and courts, devolution to lower-level governments, the use of neo-corporatist bodies, and open-ended participation rights. It urges more emphasis on the fifth option, public participation. Case studies of the environmental movement in Hungary and of student groups in Poland illustrate these general points. The book reviews the United States' experience of open-ended public participation and draws some lessons for the transition countries from the strengths and weaknesses of the American system.

Global Regularity and Uniqueness of Solutions in a Surface Growth Model Using Rigorous A-Posteriori Methods
The use of rigorous numerical methods to approach problems which can not be solved using standard methods (yet) has increased signifiantly in recent years. In this book, riogorous a-posteriori methods are used to study the time evolution of a surface growth model, given by a fourth order semi-linear parabolic partial differential equation, where standard methods fail to verify global uniqueness and smoothness of solutions. Based on an arbitrary numerical approximation, a-posteriori error-analysis is applied in order to prevent a blow up analytically. Monotheism in Christian Liturgy
In line with a profound theological understanding of liturgy as the Church at prayer (ecclesia orans), the focus of this Element is the variegated ways in which Christians address, turn to, and worship God in their central rituals and celebrations. Surveying a representative sample of official liturgical sources from different Christian Churches, the question is asked how 'pure' the monotheism expressed in them is. For one could argue that there is some ambiguity involved, especially with respect to (i) the peculiar position of Christ, the Son of God, and God the Father in liturgical prayers, and (ii) regarding the veneration of the saints. The essential key to unlock this complex and multi-layered reality is a meticulous study of the essential doxological nature of Christian liturgy, both from a phenomenological point of view and on the basis of fine textual analyses.
