The Transnational in Literary Studies

This volume clarifies the meanings and applications of the concept of the transnational and identifies areas in which the concept can be particularly useful. The division of the volume into three parts reflects areas which seem particularly amenable to analysis through a transnational lens. The chapters in Part 1 present case studies in which the concept replaces or complements traditionally dominant concepts in literary studies. These chapters demonstrate, for example, why some dramatic texts and performances can better be described as transnational than as postcolonial, and how the transnational underlies and complements concepts such as world literature. Part 2 assesses the advantages and...

The Delicate, Passionate World of Gregory Morgan and Vivien Prevette / Book 2 - The Courtship

The Delicate, Passionate World is a fairy tale for thoughtful, sensitive adults loosely based on the tale of Psyche and Eros. While easy and fun to read, exploring desire and love's milestones from this gentle and elevated point of view is intended to take the reader toward the Big Questions of life. A love story can touch your heart. Can it also touch your soul? The Delicate, Passionate World is a fairy tale for thoughtful, sensitive adults. It is a loose retelling in a 20th Century setting of one of the oldest supernatural love stories ever told - that of Eros and Psyche, his mortal love. While easy and fun to read, exploring desire and love's milestones from this gentle and elevated point of view is intended to take the reader toward the Big Questions of life. So be entertained, be swept away, and maybe even find enlightenment ... Six years in the making, this one-of-a-kind self-help love story is ultimately a meditation on the Great Love.

Renaissance Beasts

Animals, as Lévi-Strauss wrote, are good to think with. This collection addresses and reassesses the variety of ways in which animals were used and thought about in Renaissance culture, challenging contemporary as well as historic views of the boundaries and hierarchies humans presume the natural world to contain. Taking as its starting point the popularity of speaking animals in sixteenth-century literature and ending with the decline of the imperial Ménagerie during the French Revolution, Renaissance Beasts uses the lens of human-animal relationships to view issues as diverse as human status and power, diet, civilization and the political life, religion and anthropocentrism, spectacle an...

German Immigrants

"This is the third volume of the German Immigrants series (see also Items 6580, 6581, and 6583), this one listing passengers from Bremen to New York between 1863 and September 1867. Owing to the total destruction of the original Bremen passenger lists, this volume, like the others, is the only practical means of discovering information on thousands of individuals for whom immigrant origin data was thought to be irretrievably lost. In effect, it is a partial reconstruction of the Bremen records, based on official passenger lists and manifests in the custody of the National Archives. It is, therefore, a record of arrivals rather than departures, and it is the closest we are ever likely to come to duplicating information in the lost Bremen records"--Publisher website (December 2007).
