Im Jahr 2004 feiert das Saarland Museum Saarbrücken sein 80jähriges Bestehen. Dies wurde zum Anlass genommen, seine Entstehungs- und Entwicklungsgeschichte einer ausführlichen und kritischen Untersuchung zu unterziehen. Dazu wurden erstmals zahlreiche archivalische Quellen und umfangreich erhaltenes Fotomaterial aus den verschiedenen Zeiten systematisch erforscht und erschlossen.
