Inherited Metabolic Diseases

The explosion of insights in the field of metabolic disease has shed new light on diagnostic as well as treatment options. ‘Inherited Metabolic Disease – A Clinical Approach’ is written with a reader-friendly consistent structure. It helps the reader to find the information in an easily accessible and rapid way when needed. Starting with an overview of the major groups of metabolic disorders it includes algorithms with questions and answers as well as numerous graphs, metabolic pathways, and an expanded index. Clinical and diagnostic details with a system and symptom based are given to facilitate an efficient and yet complete diagnostic work-up of individual patients. Further, it offer...

Clinical Hepatology

Clinical Hepatology – Principles and Practice of Hepatobiliary Diseases provides clear and comprehensive coverage of the etiology, mechanisms of disease, diagnosis, and practical management of the entire spectrum of liver and biliary disorders. It also affords an excellent, evidence-based review of the rapidly expanding field of hepatobiliary diseases.

Hepatic Transport of Organic Substances

Hepatic cells are involved in the metabolization and elimination of a variety of endogenous and exogenous substances. They mediate the uptake, processing and subsequent secretion of biliary compounds, such as various drugs or hormones, and the passage of metabolites to be released into different blood compartments. To perform vectorial passages hepatocytes show a strong polarity with sites for endocytotic processes or specific carrier molecules, and a specified system of organelles for intracellular transport and sorting, metabolization and secretion of compounds. Several aspects, e.g. regulation, control and mechanisms of hepatic traffic are reported in detail - complemented by methodological approaches to analyse and monitor these processes.

Assessment and Management of Hepatobiliary Disease

The contributions to this volume cover all aspects of the assessment and management of hepatobiliary disease. The focal points of the book consist of three state-of-the-art summaries. The first of these deals with the highly topical problem of liver transplants from the point of view of patient selection. The second considers drug-induced liver injury in view of the fact that the liver is the main metabolic site for a number of drugs. The final summary deals with liver and aging: it asks whether the liver follows the aging process of the host organisms and whether the liver of aged liver transplant candidate donors could be suitable for grafting. Aside from these topics, the volume presents basic research on hepatic transport mechanisms, intrahepatic cholestasis and gall-stone disease, which serves as a background for the topics more specifically concerning the assessment of liver function. Much of the book is then devoted to the management of the commonest forms of liver diseases and their complications, such as chronic active hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome, and ascites.

For a long time, the tight junction (TJ) was known to form and regulate the paracellular barrier between epithelia and endothelial cell sheets. Starting shortly after the discovery of the proteins forming the TJ—mainly the two families of claudins and TAMPs—several other functions have been discovered, a striking one being the surprising finding that some claudins form paracellular channels for small ions and/or water. This Special Issue includes 43 articles covering numerous dedicated topics including pathogens affecting the TJ barrier, TJ regulation via immune cells, the TJ as a therapeutic target, TJ and cell polarity, function and regulation by proteins of the tricellular TJ, TJ as a regulator of cellular processes, organ- and tissue-specific functions, TJ as sensors and reacting to environmental conditions, and last but not least, TJ proteins and cancer.

After the coming of age of lipidomics, the science of global lipid analysis has broadened its contribution to the understanding of biological processes. This volume represents a transversal view on the state of the art of research on lipid biology and bioactive lipid molecules. It includes research and review articles on the role of bioactive lipids in diverse domains like cell signaling, neuromuscular transmission, cancer pathophysiology, cardiovascular and rare diseases, antibacterial activity, the emergency of biomaterials, and associated technological and analytical developments. It provides an instantaneous picture of the place of lipidomics and its fields of application, as well as hints about the directions that lipid research may follow in the near future.
