Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1,7, University of Applied Sciences Bremen, language: English, abstract: In 2010, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development is equipped with approximately six billion euros - the highest budget it has ever had on its disposal. But still, the choir of critics is growing louder. One group is unsatisfied with the amount of money provided. They claim that the poverty of more than two billion people in the world cannot be overcome with 104 billion dollars - the worldwide amount of development aid in 2006, which is only one third higher than the budget of North Rhine-Westphalia. The other group of critics points to the fact that more than 500 billion dollars of development aid have been spent since the 1960s - whereas poverty, public debts and violent conflicts in the Global South3 have not at all diminished. They plead for a renewal of development policy concepts. One of those more progressive concepts is the idea of empowerment, which I am going to examine in this paper.

Based on years of original research, this book controversially counters almost every existing leadership model and approach. It shows how as leaders rise to senior levels, their roles become less about doing things that directly drive results and more about directing and supporting others to achieve objectives. Using case studies and research insights the authors reveal how leadership success is thus not so much about having the right core capabilities, but about creating the right environment. Using the analogy of a smartphone operating system (OS), the book presents a new way of thinking about leadership. The authors provide a clear and practical framework to follow and show how your leade...

Globalizing the Postcolony: Contesting Discourses of Gender and Development in Francophone Africa is a study of development in the former French colonies of West Africa. It takes as its starting point the international community's reporting on human and social development and gender in the developing areas, which began systematically in 1990 and which has provided a framework for policy-making in this field. This study analyzes current thinking on the challenges facing gender and development in Africa, before moving on to examine the historical factors marking the gender and development profile of the francophone West African region. Through an analysis of gender politics in the region from pre-colonial to postcolonial times, the book examines the gradual incursion of exogenous gender policies into the region throughout the 20th century.
