Matthias Chitwood (1681-1754) immigrated from England to Cumberland (now Powhatan) County, Virginia, and married Mary Key, daughter of Richard Key. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and elsewhere.
