De Renne

Much of what is known today of Georgia history was preserved through the diligent efforts of a single family. From Wormsloe, their ancestral plantation near Savannah, the De Rennes built an extraordinary collection of books and manuscripts on the history of the state and the Confederacy, much of which is now housed at the University of Georgia and the Museum of the Confederacy. This book focuses on their efforts in the years 1827 through 1970, conveying the passion and purpose with which they pursued their avocation. William Harris Bragg has mined a vast array of archival sources to present this engaging narrative of the De Renne family. He tells how wealthy bibliophile and philanthropist G....

2010 Reprint of 1945 London Edition.Letters to a Young Poet is a compilation of letters by Rainer Maria Rilke. It consists of ten letters written to a young man considering entering the German military. The letters were originally written to Franz Kappus, a 19-year-old student at the Military Academy of Vienna, of which Rilke was an alumnus. Discouraged by the prospect of military life, Kappus began to send his poetry to the 27-year-old Rilke, seeking both literary criticism and career advice. Their correspondence lasted from 1902 to 1908. In 1929, three years after Rilke's death, Kappus assembled and published the ten letters. The majority of the letters address personal issues that Kappus revealed to Rilke; their span is tremendous, ranging from atheism, loneliness, sexuality, and career choices.

This is one of the most important and revealing of all Civil War volumes. It has been practically unobtainable since the limited publication of 750 copies in 1915. Now new material in the form of dispatches not then available has been added, with a foreword by Grady McWhiney. When purchased by W.J. DeRenne, of Georgia, the letters were pasted in one volume and the telegrams in another. How the volumes came into the hands of the person from whom they were purchased was never known by either Dr. Freeman or Mr. DeRenne. From internal evidence they both felt certain that these dispatches and telegrams were from a file kept for his own use by President Davis himself. Presumably carried or sent So...
