Microrheology

Rheology is the study of the flow of matter. It is an important and active field of research that spans numerous disciplines and technological applications. The aim of this work is to provide an introduction to the theory and practice of microrheology, a relatively new area of rheology.

Rheology

This book focuses on the current research in the area of rheology. Rheological characterizations are performed on materials in order to understand the basic nature of a system, quality control of raw materials and final products. The rheological characterizations are important to study the effect of different parameters such as formulation, shelf life and temperature on the quality of final products. The book covers a broad range of rheology related topics such as microrheology, capillary rheolgical measurements, characterization of dense suspensions and numerical analysis of viscoelastic fluids.

The People vs. Big Oil—how a working-class company town harnessed the power of local politics to reclaim their community With a foreword by Bernie Sanders Home to one of the largest oil refineries in the state, Richmond, California, was once a typical company town, dominated by Chevron. This largely nonwhite, working-class city of 100,000 suffered from poverty, pollution, and poorly funded public services. It had one of the highest homicide rates per capita in the country and a jobless rate twice the national average. But when veteran labor reporter Steve Early moved from New England to Richmond in 2012, he discovered a city struggling to remake itself. In Refinery Town, Early chronicles t...

Quasicrystals

In 1984 physicists discovered a monster in the world of crystallography, a structure that appeared to contain five-fold symmetry axes, which cannot exist in strictly periodic structures. Such quasi-periodic structures became known as quasicrystals. A previously formulated theory in terms of higher dimensional space groups was applied to them and new alloy phases were prepared which exhibited the properties expected from this model more closely. Thus many of the early controversies were dissolved. In 2011, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to Dan Shechtman for the discovery of quasicrystals. This primer provides a descriptive approach to the subject for those coming to it for the first time. The various practical, experimental, and theoretical topics are dealt with in an accessible style. The book is completed by problem sets and there is a computer program that generates a Penrose lattice.

Proceedings of the Ninth International Symposium on Cyclodextrins

This volume contains the proceedings of the Ninth International Symposium on Cyclodextrins, held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, May 31 - June 3, 1998. The papers collected represent a summary of the last two years' achievements in the application of cyclodextrins in such diverse fields as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, textiles, chromatography and environmental sciences. Highlights: Chiral selection of chemicals, nuclear waste management, cyclodextrins in nasal drug delivery, cyclodextrins in pulmonary drug delivery, cyclodextrins as pharmaceutical excipients, pharmacokinetics, stabilization of drugs by cyclodextrins, structural characterization of cyclodextrin complexes by nuclear magnetic resonance and molecular modeling, artificial receptors, large cyclodextrins, cyclodextrins as enzyme models, new cyclodextrin derivatives and potentials. Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers whose work involves biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, food and chemicals and chromatographic methods, as well as fundamental cyclodextrin research.

Deep connections are emerging in the physics of non-thermal systems, such as granular media, and other "complex systems" such as glass formers, spin glasses, colloids or gels. This book discusses the unifying physical theories, developed in recent years, for the description of these systems. The special focus of the book is on recent important developments in the formulation of a Statistical Mechanics approach to granular media and the description of out-of-equilibrium dynamics, such as "jamming" phenomena, ubiquitous in these "complex systems". The book collects contributions from leading researchers in these fields, providing both an introduction, at a graduate level, to these rapidly developing subjects and featuring an up to date, self contained, presentation of theoretical and experimental developments for researchers in areas ranging from Chemistry, to Engineering and Physical Sciences.·the book discusses very hot topics in physical sciences·it includes contributions from the most prominent researchers in the area·it is clearly written and self contained
