The multidisciplinary applications of natural science in drug discovery are essential for identifying and developing new drugs and represent a promising area of research. Drug discovery is a complex and challenging process that involves multiple disciplines, including biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and medicine. One of the most interesting areas of drug discovery is using natural science, which involves the study of natural products and their potential therapeutic benefits, in which the research literature has previously been lacking appropriate attention. Multidisciplinary Applications of Natural Science for Drug Discovery and Integrative Medicine is a research book that bridges the gap ...

Perspectives on Educational Governance

In March 2019, students and researchers from Germany, the USA, China, Kenya and South Africa came together at the University of Tuebingen to discuss Educational Governance from an international perspective. The group was mainly comprised of Ph.D.- and Master-students from various disciplines - Education, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science - and debated questions such as: What are the distinctive and different rationales underlying the discourse of Educational Governance and its political, economic, academic and pedagogic objectives? How can we make these rationales visible and which theories and analytic tools can help us to decipher the meanings attached to them? Are there different local and national trajectories in education discourse and practice with regard to Educational Governance and which role do international organizations and transnational transfer play? This edited volume displays these discussions and aims at initiating a broader communication about Educational Governance between previously separated spaces.

With the ever-increasing usage of distance learning programs in academia, the need for well-designed automated systems has become vital to the success of open and distance education. Practical solutions should be discovered and disseminated to meet the software needs of instructors, academic researchers, and software engineers. System and Technology Advancements in Distance Learning meets this need, outlining computational methods, algorithms, implemented prototype systems, and applications of open and distance learning. It is targeted toward academic researchers and engineers who work with distance learning programs and software systems, as well as general participants of distance education.

Aortic Diseases Involving Visceral Artery: Clinical Therapeutic Management and Related Basic Research

Aortic diseases (mainly including aortic dissection and aneurysm) are common but life-threatening entities. With development of surgical and endovascular techniques, treatment outcomes have been improved gradually. However, a lot of problems still require to be resolved. Aortic diseases in the region of visceral arteries are difficult to treat, especially for aortic dissection, which is usually associated with the narrow true lumen. Conventional open repair is associated with high trauma and high morbidity and mortality. Endovascular intervention has been applied in the last decade. Fenestration technique, chimney technique, and branched stent-grafts have been used for aortic aneurysms. For aortic dissection, management in the region of the visceral arteries is more complicated, and more techniques have been described. Besides these three methods, exclusion of the re-entry by vascular occluder, road block strategy, and candy-plug technique are also reported. However, these endovascular techniques vary in characteristics, procedures, and outcomes. There is no consensus on the optimal treatment for these complicated entities.

Advances toward improved understanding and treatment of uncommon ovarian cancer types and subtypes

Ovarian cancer is an umbrella term for a collection of distinct disease entities (histotypes). Until now, the majority of research has focussed on the most common histotype, high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC), which accounts for 70% of cases. The less common histotypes – including endometrioid, clear cell, mucinous, low-grade serous, carcinosarcoma, and non-epithelial histotypes – have received far less research attention. Accordingly, while major advances in our understanding of HGSOC have led to molecularly-directed therapies that improve patient outcomes, progress in less common histotypes has lagged behind. Notably, many of the uncommon histotypes demonstrate resistance to conventional chemotherapy regimens, and their inherent biological differences suggest most are unlikely to respond to emerging molecular therapeutics designed to target the biology of common ovarian cancer types.
