Appearance Politics
Lex Lu argues in Appearance Politics that crafting an appealing and powerful outward image has long been an essential political instrument in China. Its traces may be found in historical records, imperial portraits, physiognomic prognostications, photographs, posters, statues, and digital images. Employing rare archival materials from Beijing, Shanghai, and Nanjing, Lu tells the story of these political maneuverings. We learn the ways in which political actors and their agents designed their images, and we observe the shifting standards of male beauty that guided their decisions. Appearance Politics examines five case studies: the usurpation of Ming Prince Zhu Di; the rise of Manchu masculinity and its mixed standards of Han Chinese and Manchu beauty at the Yongzheng court; the use of modern photography and Western male beauty standards at the turn of the twentieth century; the making of the Republican founding father Sun Yat-sen; and the creation of visual templates of Mao Zedong. Lu's rich empirical study counters systematic stereotypical descriptions of Chinese male leadership embedded in Western media and scholarship.

A group of Chinese rural women who want to get rid of difficulties, after entering the city, something unexpected happened... It takes Zheng Jinhua, a rural woman in Fujian and eastern Fujian as the main line. It tells about her experiences when she was young, after marriage and "working in the city", and describes her tragic childhood, humiliating youth, difficult marriage, and emotional life. At the same time, it depicts the fate of 12 rural women. The novel begins with the news of Zheng Fangmei's death, which leads to the memories of Zheng Jinhua's childhood and youth stories, as well as the process of struggling for family life after adulthood. The book describes her emotional entanglements with her lover Chen Yuejin, her husband Huang Biaofu, Fa Xiaozhengbin, and fellow villager Huang Jianfeng. This book reflects the current situation of farmers in the Chinese Mainland working in cities from the end of the twentieth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century, particularly vividly describing the real events of ordinary rural women, and typically reveals the emotional world of these women.
A Companion to Yi jing Numerology and Cosmology
Translations of the Yi jing into western languages have been biased towards the yili ('meaning and pattern') tradition, whereas studies of the xiangshu ('image and number') tradition - which takes as its point of departure the imagery and numerology associated with divination and its hexagrams, trigrams, lines, and related charts and diagrams - has remained relatively unexplored. This major new reference work is organised as a Chinese-English encyclopedia, arranged alphabetically according to the pinyin romanisation, with Chinese characters appended. A character index as well as an English index is included. The entries are of two kinds: technical terms and various other concepts related to the 'image and number' tradition, and bio-bibliographical information on Chinese Yi jing scholars. Each entry in the former category has a brief explanation that includes references to the origins of the term, cross-references, and a reference to an entry giving a more comprehensive treatment of the subject.
