An authoritative text in condensed matter physics, unifying theory and methods to present electronic structure to students and researchers.
This volume develops an effective theory approach to understanding deep neural networks of practical relevance.
Professor Chen-Ning Yang is best known for his achievements in Physics. He has also made significant contributions to the development of mathematics, as mathematics is extensively used in his research. In his long and fruitful academic career, he has witnessed many important events in the fields of Physics and Mathematics, and has collaborated or interacted with many great scientists in history. This book records eight interviews with Professor Chen-Ning Yang, which were conducted by the authors from 2016 to 2019.Through Professor Yang's unique perspective, major scientific events in the 20th century were revisited vividly, elaborating the development and mutual influences of mathematics and physics, as well as unveiling the academic work, the daily lives, and the personalities of scientists, as well as their collaboration and competition, some stories unknown to the public before are also revealed in this book.
Polysaccharide-Based Hydrogels: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications looks at the synthesis, characterization and application of polysaccharide-based materials in a broad array of fields. The book discusses the role of polysaccharides in the preparation of hydrogels, the use of hydrogel-based green materials, and their applications in biomedical applications, drug delivery, water purification techniques, food industries, agricultural fields, and pharmaceuticals applications. Written by leading experts in this field, this book will be a valuable reference for scientists, academicians, researchers, technologists, consultants and policymakers. - Explains origin, extraction, processing, structural analysis and applications of polysaccharides-based hydrogels - Includes chapters that specifically focus on a particular hydrogel - Provides specific applications of polysaccharide hydrogels
This dissertation brings together a number of topics in the theory of time-reversal invariant topological insulators. The first four chapters are devoted to the transport properties of the two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin Hall state. We explain nonlocal transport measurements in mercury telluride (HgTe) quantum wells in terms of a Landauer-Büttiker theory of helical edge transport and confirm the discovery of the quantum spin Hall state in this material. We find that decoherence can lead to backscattering without breaking microscopic time-reversal symmetry. As an example of incoherent scattering, we study a Kondo impurity in an interacting helical edge liquid. A renormalization group analy...
This volume celebrates the 100th birthday of Professor Chen-Ning Frank Yang (Nobel 1957), one of the giants of modern science and a living legend. Starting with reminiscences of Yang's time at the research centre for theoretical physics at Stonybrook (now named C. N. Yang Institute) by his successor Peter van Nieuwenhuizen, the book is a collection of articles by world-renowned mathematicians and theoretical physicists. This emphasizes the Dialogue Between Physics and Mathematics that has been a central theme of Professor Yang’s contributions to contemporary science. Fittingly, the contributions to this volume range from experimental physics to pure mathematics, via mathematical physics. O...
He, a wandering orphan, was fortunate enough to witness the confrontation between two peerless experts, and thought that the two of them were legendary immortals. Legend has it that the pinnacle of martial arts can shatter space and become an Immortal God! He decided: I will shatter the void and become an immortal god, and enjoy eternal life!
