Substance Use Disorder: Above and Beyond Addiction

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a mental disorder that causes an individual to compulsively consume legal or illegal drugs such as alcohol, opioids, methamphetamine, marijuana, and medications, despite harmful consequences. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), alcohol causes 5.1 % of the global burden of disease, and harmful drinking behavior is associated with more than 200 diseases and injury conditions. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, about 200 million people are addicted to cocaine, cannabis, opioids and sedative-hypnotics.

The Impact of Maternal Nutrition on the Offspring

Maternal nutritional status affects the offsprings health development significantly during early embryogenesis, pregnancy, birth and lactation, and subsequently determines health during growth and even throughout adulthood. On the other end of the human lifetime scale, the importance of maternal nutrition expands into the time period before conception: Pre-conception nutritional status not only influences fertility, but also embryogenesis and life-long health. Predisposition for coronary heart diseases, Type-2 diabetes mellitus, and hypertension can be caused by intrauterine adaptations to fetal malnutrition. Hence, optimizing nutrition for women during their reproductive period can be expec...

Efficient Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Ophthalmic Imaging

Ophthalmic imaging techniques, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography (OCTA), fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography, generate vast amounts of visual data, allowing for a detailed examination of the eye's structure and function. These images provide invaluable insights into the presence and progression of various ocular diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. While ophthalmologists possess expertise in interpreting these images, the manual analysis of large datasets can be time-consuming, prone to errors, and subject to inter-observer variability. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based approaches have emerged as promis...

  • Publisher: Springer

The book mainly introduces readers to the development and current status of water quality criteria (WQC) in China and other countries or areas, and proposes a minimum toxicity data requirement (MTDR; i.e., six species from three phyla) as the principle metric for deriving WQC in China. Further, ten model species from 4 different phyla are recommended as domestic test species, and the methodologies for deriving aquatic life criteria, sediment criteria, ecocriteria and nutrient criteria in China are also described in detail. In order to demonstrate the methods, several representative chemical pollutants and aquatic environments are highlighted as examples. The book provides important references for future WQC-related research in China, which will make it of great interest to researchers and graduate students in the fields of environmental science, ecology and aquatic science etc.

Carbon Nanotubes

Since their discovery in 1991, carbon nanotubes have been considered as one of the most promising materials for a wide range of applications, in virtue of their outstanding properties. During the last two decades, both single-walled and multi-walled CNTs probably represented the hottest research topic concerning materials science, equally from a fundamental and from an applicative point of view. There is a prevailing opinion among the research community that CNTs are now ready for application in everyday world. This book provides an (obviously not exhaustive) overview on some of the amazing possible applications of CNT-based materials in the near future.
