Dynamic Kerr Effect

This book is conceived as a lecture course on the theory of dielectric and Kerr effect relaxation in molecular fluids. It is based on seminars and lectures to final year graduate students and students preparing for a Ph.D. The book comprises the following: the rotational diffusion equation; perturbative solution obtained from convolution products; Kerr effect response in pulsed electric fields; rotary friction and diffusion coefficients in the case of partial slip conditions; linear detection; electric birefringence in time-varying fields; study of phase angles; the Fokker-Planck–Kramers equation; the role of molecular rotational inertia; and nonlinear dielectric relaxation in coupled electric fields. The literature on the subject originates essentially from review articles which, however, are pitched at such a high level that it is very difficult for students to understand. Moreover, a lot of details are missing from the calculations in these fundamental papers. This book therefore attempts, in a more didactic manner, to fill these gaps. Request Inspection Copy

Clark Kerr's World of Higher Education Reaches the 21st Century

This volume consists of original essays by academic leaders and scholars connected to Clark Kerr’s life and work. He was arguably America’s most significant higher education thinker and public policy analyst in the last 50 years of the 20th century and renowned globally. However, little thoughtful attention has been devoted to assessing the whole of his work. Some commentators misunderstand the man as well as his ideas. The California Master Plan for Higher Education of 1960 was one of his famous undertakings, as was his part in shaping the multi-campus University of California towards global eminence. He coined the word “multiversity” to describe what he called the “uses” of the...

This volume provides an intellectual history of Kerr's vision of the multiversity, as expressed in his most famous work, The Uses of the University, and in his greatest administrative accomplishment, the California Master Plan for Higher Education. Building upon Kerr's use of the visionary hedgehog/shrewd fox dichotomy, the book explains the rise of the University of California as due to the articulation and implementation of the hedgehog concept of systemic excellence that underpins the master plan.Arguing that the university's recent problems flow from a fox culture, characterized by a free-for-all approach to management, including excessive executive compensation, this is a call for a new...

Spin 2004

This comprehensive volume covers the most recent advances in the field of spin physics, including the latest research in high energy and nuclear physics and the study of nuclear spin structure. The comprehensive coverage also includes polarized proton and electron acceleration and storage as well as polarized ion sources and targets. Many significant new results and achievements on the different topics considered at the symposium are presented in this book for the first time. Contents: Present Understanding of the Nucleon Spin Structure (A Metz)Understanding Transversity: Present and Future (V Barone)Results and Future Prospects for Muon (g - 2) (B L Roberts)First Results from RHIC Spin Prog...
