Speaking through the Silence
Uncovering the structures and functions of conversational narratives uttered within natural social networks, Laine Berman shows how working-class Javanese women discursively construct identity and meaning within the rigid constraints of an hierarchical social order. She does this by identifying the silences, the "unsaid", and by revealing both the structure and function of silence in terms of its indexical reference to local meaning. It is here that the force of the Javanese language as used in everyday interaction shows itself to be an extremely potent philosophical entity as well as a means of social control. Thus, at least in regard to the urban poor, the book boldly questions the difference between traditional definitions of Javanese elegance and oppression. This study will contribute to our understanding of the social consequences of language use, to the linguistic knowledge of Indonesia and Java, and to such basic linguistic issues as narrative structure and function, speech levels and styles, and indexicality features.

Developing Modern Livestock Production in Tropical Countries
The Animal Production International Seminar (APIS) is the first international conference held by the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya. APIS was held for the first time in 2010 and was repeated every three years. In 2022, the 5th APIS was organized as an online meeting. The Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya, is optimistic that the results of the 5th APIS will just be as successful as the 4th APIS in 2019. The theme of 5th APIS was "Developing Modern Livestock Production in Tropical Countries". The 5th APIS discussed matters related to strategies for developing modern livestock production in several tropical countries. The participants of 5th APIS, including keynote speakers and invited speakers, are from various countries (tropical and sub-tropical). These proceedings present the selected papers from the 5th APIS conference. The wedding of the century between Noto and Yanti was supposed to make the tie between the two kingdoms that much closer, yet it also makes the people of Solo realize just how well-off the people of Jogya truly are. They have their beloved sultan actually working for them, managing the province ably, while the sunan of Solo is basically powerless outside the palace wall. The people demanded that the two kingdoms be merged. The solution made Noto the crown prince of both kingdoms, a position that will eventually make him the king of the new kingdom, the Kingdom of New Mataram. Noto's struggle with Nyai Roro Kidul escalated as he proceeded to destroy all the ill-gotten accursed weapons in the armories of Jogya and Solo. Noto's attempt to rid of superstitions from among the Javanese while not falling into the clasp of Muslim fundamentalism forced him to thread a fine line guided by several of his elders.
