Fundamentals of Thermal Radiation for Energy Utilization in Fuel Combustion

This book is in the field of Engineering Thermophysics. It first introduces the authors’ academic thoughts of photo-thermal energy cascade conversion in the fuel combustion. Afterward, a series of thermal radiation theories and models have been developed based on the aim of radiative energy utilization, including spectral radiation available energy theory, gas radiation model under complex combustion conditions, and calculation model of radiation available energy transfer in combustion medium. Based on simulation and experimental results, the radiative energy characteristics of different fuel combustion are introduced. This book develops the radiation theory of the combustion process from a new perspective, integrating theories, models, and experimental results. This book can be used as a reference for scientists, engineers, and graduate students engaged in energy environment, combustion, and thermal radiation.

Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy (In 2 Volumes)

Photodynamic therapy utilizes photosensitizers together with irradiating light of specific wavelengths interacting with oxygen to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species, in particular singlet oxygen, for clinical treatment of several malignant and non-malignant pathologies. Recently, enhanced photodynamic therapy was successfully achieved by using new light sources (i.e., light-emitting diode), novel functional nano-photosensitizers, oxygen supply and synergistic therapy. In addition, photodynamic therapy has been increasingly used in the fields of antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities. This two-volume work highlights the state-of-the-art in enhanced photodynamic therapy for clinical applications.

Dark Machines

This book offers a critical primer on how Artificial Intelligence and digitalization are shaping our planet and the risks posed to society and environmental sustainability. As the pressure of human activities accelerates on Earth, so too does the hope that digital and artificially intelligent technologies will be able to help us deal with dangerous climate and environmental change. Technology giants, international think-tanks and policy-makers are increasingly keen to advance agendas that contribute to “AI for Good” or “AI for the Planet." Dark Machines explores why it is naïve and dangerous to assume converging forces of a growing climate crisis and technological change will act syne...

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the ACM/IFIP/USENIX 12th International Middleware Conference, held in Lisbon, Portugal, in December 2011. The 22 revised full papers presented together with 2 industry papers and an invited paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 125 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on social networks, storage and performance management, green computing and resource management, notification and streaming, replication and caching, security and interoperability, and run-time (re)configuration and inspection.

Next year (2018), we will be celebrating the 15th anniversary of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health—IJERPH (ISSN 1660-4601). Hence, we are currently organizing a Special Issue to commemorate this important milestone. Founded in 2004, IJERPH has experienced a tremendous growth in terms of the number and quality of scientific publications. With a 2016 impact factor of 2.101, IJERPH now ranks among the top international journals in the emerging field of environmental research and public health. As described on our website (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/ijerph), IJERPH is a peer-reviewed journal that focuses on the publication of scientific and technical infor...

Effective Statistical Learning Methods for Actuaries I

Effective Statistical Learning Methods for Actuaries I

This book summarizes the state of the art in generalized linear models (GLMs) and their various extensions: GAMs, mixed models and credibility, and some nonlinear variants (GNMs). In order to deal with tail events, analytical tools from Extreme Value Theory are presented. Going beyond mean modeling, it considers volatility modeling (double GLMs) and the general modeling of location, scale and shape parameters (GAMLSS). Actuaries need these advanced analytical tools to turn the massive data sets now at their disposal into opportunities. The exposition alternates between methodological aspects and case studies, providing numerical illustrations using the R statistical software. The technical prerequisites are kept at a reasonable level in order to reach a broad readership. This is the first of three volumes entitled Effective Statistical Learning Methods for Actuaries. Written by actuaries for actuaries, this series offers a comprehensive overview of insurance data analytics with applications to P&C, life and health insurance. Although closely related to the other two volumes, this volume can be read independently.

Ambition

  • Categories: Law

"Ambition is a dominant force in for human civilization, driving its greatest achievements and most horrific abuses. Our striving has brought art, airplanes, and antibiotics, as well as wars, genocide, and despotism. This mixed record raises obvious concerns about how we can channel ambition in the most productive directions. To that end, the book begins by exploring three central focuses of ambition: recognition, power, and money,. It argues that an excessive preoccupation with these external markers for success can be self defeating for individuals and toxic for society. Discussion then shifts to the obstacles to constructive ambition and the consequences when ambitions are skewed or block...

Effectiveness of Influencer Marketing

Effectiveness of Influencer Marketing

Influencers are defined as independent opinion leaders on social media networks who influence the attitudes of their followers through blogs, tweets and the use of other social media. As a result, influencer marketing has become an integral part of brands' marketing strategies. This book has the overarching goal to examine the impact of influencer marketing on consumer behavior and the resulting business success. The first empirical project explicitly examines the question of which influencer characteristics should be considered in the selection process in order to increase different campaign metrics along the consumer decision journey. Campaign data from several brands is used for the project and is extended with survey data from a large-scale consumer survey. The second empirical project examines how the influencer marketing channel, compared to other firm and consumer activities, affects consumer interest and firm performance. The project uses historical data from one of Europe's largest specialized online retailers and analyzes it in a time series model.
