A whirlwind tour through the utopias of modernity The Curious Enlightenment of Professor Caritat is a brilliant fictional excursion through Western political philosophy from one of our most original thinkers. Professor Caritat, a middle-aged Candide, walks naively from his native land to the neighbouring countries of Utilitaria, Communitaria, and Libertaria on a quest to find the best of all possible worlds. Freed from the confines of his ivory tower, this wandering intellectual is made to confront the perplexed state of modern thinking in a dazzling comedy of ideas.
Organ transplantation has been one of the miracles of modern-day medicine but, in addition to presenting enormous technical and clinical challenges, it throws up major ethical and legal issues principally from the perspective of the donor. Evolving capabilities in the spheres of both organ and tissue transplantation, coupled with rapidly-escalating demand, assert consistent and critical pressure on our ethical and legal principles and frameworks, including the expansion of the potential donor pool beyond the conventional categories of donor. This volume brings together seminal papers analyzing such matters in the context of an ever-increasingly important area of clinical practice.
SHERAZADE, AGED 17, DARK CURLY HAIR, GREEN EYES, MISSING Sherazade is seventeen, Algerian, and a ¬runaway in Paris. In Paris, Sherazade is pursued by Julian, the son of French-Algerians who is an ardent Arabist. Pigeon-holed by Julian into the ¬traditional e...
The objective of this work is to define and establish the class of adverbs in Old Anatolian Turkish (OAT) as a solid grammatical category. In this work, adverbs and adverbials are taken in a wider scope, and the phrasal and syntactic adverbial constructions such as word groups, converbs and adverbial clauses are analyzed for that purpose. Adverbs are treated as a syntactic phenomenon and all analyses are carried out on syntactic contexts in examples of full sentences and sentence groups. In this work, the aim is to answer the following questions in OAT: to show what the functions and functional variations of adverbs are in the sentence, to show what the structures and the structural variations of adverbs are, to define what the meanings of the adverbs in OAT as a grammatical category are by examining the lexical, morphological and syntactic elements in the sentence.
At his wit’s end with his son’s grief over the death of his mother a year earlier, Sheppard invites a troubled youth, Rufus, into their home. Contemptuous of Sheppard, Rufus resists the man’s attempts to improve him, but the extent—and consequences—of Rufus’s disdain for Sheppard become clear only in Rufus’s dealings with Sheppard’s son, Norton. American author Flannery O’Connor is known for her portrayal of flawed characters and their inevitable spiritual transformation. “The Lame Shall Enter First” is a haunting story of a flawed man unable to connect with and comfort his grieving son.
