We are delighted to present the 2023 Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine “Rising Stars” article collection. This collection showcases the high-quality work of internationally recognized researchers in the early stages of their independent careers. All Rising Star researchers were individually nominated by the Chief Editors of the Journal in recognition of their potential to influence the future directions in their respective fields. The work presented here highlights the diversity of research performed across the entire breadth of cardiovascular medicine, including the elucidation of fundamental biology, the development of novel diagnostics or therapeutics, computational modelling approaches, and bioengineering strategies for regeneration.
Ten Thousand Miles of Clouds and Moons gathers sixteen phenomenal writers of the Chinese language in their English debut: eight fiction writers, six poets, and two essayists. Amongst these dazzling tellings, the planets are being pulled closer to the earth; a treasured classical fiction holds the secrets of the universe; shameful acts of urban ennui are committed over- and underground; a couple navigates the phantasmagoric border between life and death; the classrooms of the eighties and nineties are fleetingly free. Ranging from cityscapes to mountain ranges, ancestral lands to parallel worlds, these authors exhibit a panoramic vista of contemporary Chinese-language writing at its most imaginative and incisive, balancing intellectual power with lyrical enchantment to lend insight into a nation oscillating between tradition and modernity, apocalyptic visions and pedestrian loves, provocation and nostalgia, reality and dreamscapes.
Recently, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have received a lot of attention to treat gastrointestinal cancers. Compared with traditional treatments, immunotherapy can kill cancer cells by activating the antitumor immunity, the specific recognition of cancer antigens preventing normal cells from being attacked. However, the application of ICIs is accompanied by a series of specific toxic reactions caused by the functional stimulation of the immune system, which are called immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Early identification and timely intervention to handle irAEs are usually required to maximize the therapeutic effect of ICIs. In addition, related surgical complications after neoadj...
Platelets are increasingly recognized for their role as mediators of immune response and inflammation. As major components of the hematological system, they form an important bridge between immunity and coagulation. In the context of viral infections, platelets may suppress viral dissemination but can also support viral persistence. When platelets become hyperactivated in response to an infection, patients can develop immuno-thrombosis and coagulopathy. These derangements of hemostasis are particularly relevant in the context of infection with the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and the subsequent development of coronavirus disease, COVID-19, a disease in which thromboembolic events are an important cause of morbidity and mortality.
This state-of-the-art text describes the science behind the system and drug-dependent components of PBPK models, its applications in translational and regulatory science, e.g., guiding drug discovery and development, and supporting precision medicine initiatives. To incorporate state-of-the-art knowledge, each chapter is written by leaders in the field and illustrated by clear case studies. Connecting basic and applied science, this book explores the potential of PBPK modeling for improving therapeutics and is designed for a wide audience encompassing graduate students as well as biopharmaceutics scientists and clinical pharmacologists. Features: 1. Provides a basic understanding of the physiologically-based pharmacokinetic modeling and its applications 2. Assists the reader in understanding product performance to allow for rapid product development and establish bioequivalence 3. Well-constructed content and added value of real examples 4. Illustrates how using available resources via modeling and simulation leads to a reduction in the costs related to drug development, which directly affects the costs to patients

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of current understanding of periostin and its importance for human health and disease. Periostin is a secretory matricellular protein that has been revealed to play key roles in fibrillogenesis and cell migration, including metastasis of cancer cells. The production of periostin is upregulated during fibrotic responses and the mechanisms by which it promotes fibrosis have become a focus of interest owing to the potential clinical benefit to be derived from periostin blockade. In this book, readers will find coverage of all aspects, from the basic properties of periostin and its function as a scaffold for assembly of extracellular proteins through to its roles in bone and tissue regeneration, tumorigenesis, myocardial infarction, inflammatory and immune system disorders, and other diseases. Readers will also find the latest information on functions of periostin related to stemness and the application of periostin as a biomarker. It is hoped that the detailed knowledge of periostin and its pathobiological significance provided in this book will aid in the search for effective treatments for currently incurable diseases.
