Mathematical Modeling and Computational Predictions in Oncoimmunology

Mathematical Modeling and Computational Predictions in Oncoimmunology

Cancer is a complex adaptive dynamic system that causes both local and systemic failures in the patient. Cancer is caused by a number of gain-of-function and loss-of-function events, that lead to cells proliferating without control by the host organism over time. In cancer, the immune system modulates cancer cell population heterogeneity and plays a crucial role in disease outcomes. The immune system itself also generates multiple clones of different cell types, with some clones proliferating quickly and maturing into effector cells. By creating regulatory signals and their networks, and generating effector cells and molecules, the immune system recognizes and kills abnormal cells. Anti-cancer immune mechanisms are realized as multi-layer, nonlinear cellular and molecular interactions. A number of factors determine the outcome of immune system-tumor interactions, including cancer-associated antigens, immune cells, and host organisms.

Machine Learning and Optimization Techniques for Automotive Cyber-Physical Systems

This book provides comprehensive coverage of various solutions that address issues related to real-time performance, security, and robustness in emerging automotive platforms. The authors discuss recent advances towards the goal of enabling reliable, secure, and robust, time-critical automotive cyber-physical systems, using advanced optimization and machine learning techniques. The focus is on presenting state-of-the-art solutions to various challenges including real-time data scheduling, secure communication within and outside the vehicle, tolerance to faults, optimizing the use of resource-constrained automotive ECUs, intrusion detection, and developing robust perception and control techniques for increasingly autonomous vehicles.

Artificial intelligence in predicting, determining and controlling cell phenotype or tissue function in inflammatory diseases

Artificial intelligence in predicting, determining and controlling cell phenotype or tissue function in inflammatory diseases

The last decade has seen rapid development in the use of computational techniques at bulk tissue and single-cell level. However, our knowledge remains limited in this regard, and further progress is needed, especially in inflammatory and degenerative diseases. Controlling, modeling, or predicting cellular phenotype in this context using artificial intelligence (AI) will greatly improve the available in vitro, in situ, in vivo, and in silico methods, but also aid in the understanding of disease pathology and therapeutic efficiency. These methods not only have ramifications for our pathophysiological understanding of tissue function but are also important for advancing AI methods in cell culture, tissue explants, or in vivo for immunologically relevant characteristics of single cells, cell populations, and tissues to predict cell or tissue function.

Essential Current Concepts in Stem Cell Biology

This textbook describes the biology of different adult stem cell types and outlines the current level of knowledge in the field. It clearly explains the basics of hematopoietic, mesenchymal and cord blood stem cells and also covers induced pluripotent stem cells. Further, it includes a chapter on ethical aspects of human stem cell research, which promotes critical thinking and responsible handling of the material. Based on the international masters program Molecular and Developmental Stem Cell Biology taught at Ruhr-University Bochum and Tongji University Shanghai, the book is a valuable source for postdocs and researchers working with stems cells and also offers essential insights for physicians and dentists wishing to expand their knowledge. This textbook is a valuable complement to Concepts and Applications of Stem Cell Biology, also published in the Learning Materials in Biosciences textbook series.

Guanzi

Named for the famous Chinese minister of state Guan Zhong (d. 645 B.C.), the Guanzi is one of the largest collections of ancient Chinese writings still in existence. With this volume, W. Allyn Rickett completes the first full translation of the Guanzi into English. Throughout the text, Rickett provides extensive notes. He also supplies an introduction to the volume and a comprehensive index.
