This volume offers a detailed interpretation of Plato’s texts and Platonic philosophy in its various forms and shapes as a living force in the history of philosophy, from the Hellenistic age, through the Middle Ages and Renaissance Italy, to modern England, America, Japan, and Israel. Most of the contributions here deal with the afterlife and influence of Plato’s dialogues in later Greek philosophy and in various places and periods, and approach a number of dialogues and issues from new perspectives, shedding new light on some ancient problems. These studies represent no single approach, and illustrate, in their various ways, some different methods of approaching the original and ever-surprising author that Plato has always been.
This volume consists of essays published by John Glucker between 1987 and 2014 in various books and periodicals, now assembled for the first time. They deal with aspects of the contributions to Western thought of two of its major representatives – indeed, two of the major figures in the whole of European intellectual history – Plato and Cicero. All but one of the book’s chapters are in English, but ancient texts are usually quoted in the original Greek or Latin. Some of these essays deal with the interpretation of sections or parts of Plato and Cicero’s philosophical works, while others study the influence of these writings on the history of ancient and modern thought. Some of the articles are more technical, and will therefore be of interest to scholars and reserachers, while others are directed at ‘laymen’ with a good basic background knowledge of Western thought.

The author argues that Paul characterizes the Corinthian community as an ancient school, a characterization Paul exploits both to defend himself as a good teacher and to censure the Corinthians as poor students.

The fall of Communism in Eastern Europe opened up a new future—for theology, too, not least in Romania, perhaps of all Orthodox nations the most open to the West. Young Romanian Orthodox theologians seized the opportunity to study and research in the West, availing themselves of mentors and resources hitherto denied them; some have settled in the West, others returned home. This study tries to reconstruct the dispute over rhetoric in Hellenistic thought, by using two main interrelated axes. Firstly, it delineates the exact milieu in which this dispute took place, including locations, dates and persons. Secondly, five main arguments used against rhetoric have been reconstructed, all of which concentrate on rhetorics claim to be considered an art.
Monique Cuany seeks to answer two major questions which still divide and puzzle commentators with respect to the speech in Athens in Acts 17:16-34: What is the relationship between the speech's main part and its 'Christian conclusion'? And what is the relationship between the speech's message and Greek philosophy? Through an in-depth analysis of the religious and philosophical context alluded to in Acts 17 and a careful verse by verse examination of the speech, the author proposes a new answer to both of these questions. She suggests that the so-called Christian appendix, which has long seemed totally disconnected from the rest of the speech and lacking historical verisimilitude in light of the audience depicted by the narrative, is actually the climax of the argument of the speech and would have been more easily understood by a Greek audience than has been thought in the past.
