"This book concerns matter that is intrinsically difficult: convex optimization, complementarity and duality, nonsmooth analysis, linear and nonlinear programming, etc. The author has skillfully introduced these and many more concepts, and woven them into a seamless whole by retaining an easy and consistent style throughout. The book is not all theory: There are many real-life applications in structural engineering, cable networks, frictional contact problems, and plasticity... I recommend it to any reader who desires a modern, authoritative account of nonsmooth mechanics and convex optimization." — Prof. Graham M.L. Gladwell, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Waterloo, Fello...

Optimization and Anti-optimization of Structures Under Uncertainty

The volume presents a collaboration between internationally recognized experts on anti-optimization and structural optimization, and summarizes various novel ideas, methodologies and results studied over 20 years. The book vividly demonstrates how the concept of uncertainty should be incorporated in a rigorous manner during the process of designing real-world structures. The necessity of anti-optimization approach is first demonstrated, then the anti-optimization techniques are applied to static, dynamic and buckling problems, thus covering the broadest possible set of applications. Finally, anti-optimization is fully utilized by a combination of structural optimization to produce the optimal design considering the worst-case scenario. This is currently the only book that covers the combination of optimization and anti-optimization. It shows how various optimization techniques are used in the novel anti-optimization technique, and how the structural optimization can be exponentially enhanced by incorporating the concept of worst-case scenario, thereby increasing the safety of the structures designed in various fields of engineering.

Composing Japanese Musical Modernity

Composing Japanese Musical Modernity

When we think of composers, we usually envision an isolated artist separate from the orchestra—someone alone in a study, surround by staff paper—and in Europe and America this image generally has been accurate. For most of Japan’s musical history, however, no such role existed—composition and performance were deeply intertwined. Only when Japan began to embrace Western culture in the late nineteenth century did the role of the composer emerge. In Composing Japanese Musical Modernity, Bonnie Wade uses an investigation of this new musical role to offer new insights not just into Japanese music but Japanese modernity at large and global cosmopolitan culture. Wade examines the short hist...

Linear Algebra I: Basic Concepts

This is the first volume of the two-volume book on linear algebra, in the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) Engineering Course. The objective of this volume is to present, from the engineering viewpoint, the standard mathematical results in linear algebra such as those on systems of equations and eigenvalue problems. In addition to giving mathematical theorems and formulas, it explains how the mathematical concepts such as rank, eigenvalues, and singular values are linked to engineering applications and numerical computations. In particular, the following four aspects are emphasized.

Linear Algebra Ii: Advanced Topics For Applications

This is the second volume of the two-volume book on linear algebra in the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) Engineering Course. The objective of this second volume is to branch out from the standard mathematical results presented in the first volume to illustrate useful specific topics pertaining to engineering applications. While linear algebra is primarily concerned with systems of equations and eigenvalue problems for matrices and vectors with real or complex entries, this volumes covers other topics such as matrices and graphs, nonnegative matrices, systems of linear inequalities, integer matrices, polynomial matrices, generalized inverses, and group representation theory. The chapters are, for the most part, independent of each other, and can be read in any order according to the reader's interest. The main objective of this book is to present the mathematical aspects of linear algebraic methods for engineering that will potentially be effective in various application areas.

IUTAM Symposium on the Vibration Analysis of Structures with Uncertainties

The Symposium was aimed at the theoretical and numerical problems involved in modelling the dynamic response of structures which have uncertain properties due to variability in the manufacturing and assembly process, with automotive and aerospace structures forming prime examples. It is well known that the difficulty in predicting the response statistics of such structures is immense, due to the complexity of the structure, the large number of variables which might be uncertain, and the inevitable lack of data regarding the statistical distribution of these variables. The Symposium participants presented the latest thinking in this very active research area, and novel techniques were present...
