Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, which severely affects the quality of life and survival of patients. There are approximately 537 million diabetic people globally in 2021 predicted to rise to 783 million by 2045 (IDF Diabetes Atlas 2021). Despite improvements in glycaemic controls and other advanced therapies, vascular complications remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D).
