Japan’s Dual Civil Society

Japan differs from other industrialized democracies in having many small, local groups but few large, professionally managed national organizations. This book provides a comprehensive overview of Japan's civil society and a new theory, based on political institutions, to explain why it has developed as it has.

Contemporary Capitalism

This book argues that there is no single best institutional arrangement for organizing modern societies. Therefore, the market should not be considered the ideal and universal arrangement for coordinating economic activity. Instead, the editors argue, the economic institutions of capitalism exhibit a large variety of objectives and tools that complement each other and can not work in isolation. The various chapters of the book ask what logics and functions institutions follow and why they emerge, mature and persist in the forms they do.

Comprehensive Quality by Design for Pharmaceutical Product Development and Manufacture

Covers a widespread view of Quality by Design (QbD) encompassing the many stages involved in the development of a new drug product. The book provides a broad view of Quality by Design (QbD) and shows how QbD concepts and analysis facilitate the development and manufacture of high quality products. QbD is seen as a framework for building process understanding, for implementing robust and effective manufacturing processes and provides the underpinnings for a science-based regulation of the pharmaceutical industry. Edited by the three renowned researchers in the field, Comprehensive Quality by Design for Pharmaceutical Product Development and Manufacture guides pharmaceutical engineers and scie...

The Origin of Competitive Strength

The Origin of Competitive Strength

When the war ended on August IS, 1945, I was a naval engineering cadet at the Kure Navy Yard near Hiroshima, Japan. A week later, I was demobi lized and returned to my home in Tokyo, fortunate not to find it ravaged by firebombing. At the beginning of September, a large contingent of the Ameri can occupation forces led by General Douglas MacArthur moved its base from Yokohama to Tokyo. Near my home I watched a procession of American mili tary motor vehicles snaking along Highway 1. This truly awe-inspiring cavalcade included jeeps, two-and-a-half-ton trucks, and enormous trailers mounted with tanks and artillery. At the time, I was a 21-year-old student in the Machinery Section of Engineerin...

Fiscal Governance in Europe

Fiscal Governance in Europe

This book presents a theoretical framework to discuss how governments coordinate budgeting decisions. There are two modes of fiscal governance conducive to greater fiscal discipline, a mode of delegation and a mode of contracts. These modes contrast with a fiefdom form of governance, in which the decision-making process is decentralized. An important insight is that the effectiveness of a given form of fiscal governance depends crucially upon the underlying political system. Delegation functions well when there are few, or no, ideological differences among government parties, whereas contracts are effective when there are many such differences. Empirically, delegation and contract states perform better than fiefdom states if they match the underlying political system. Additional chapters consider why countries have the fiscal institutions that they do, fiscal governance in Central and Eastern Europe, and the role of such institutions in the European Union.

Powder Mixing

The operation of a powder mixer requires a knowledge not only of the mixing mechanisms but of the physical properties of the powders being mixed. Powder Mixing is unique in that it explores the relevant physics of the powder systems including characterization procedures and rheology, and contains an extensive review of different methods that have been employed to study the structure of mixtures. The techniques for achieving structured mixtures such as microencapsulation, and recent developments in deterministic chaos theory and fractal geometry as applied to the study of powder mixing systems, are reviewed. In particular, new techniques for studying the mixing powders based on avalanching th...
