Imagine if Europe decided to fling open its doors to genetically modified organisms. Could it guarantee that consumers could still choose between products with and without GMOs? How? A panel of more than 200 researchers worked for four years on these questions. According to their conclusions, the separation of GMO and non-GMO products across the entire supply chain, i.e. from seeds to the end product on our plates, remains an obstacle course. One recent development is that the labelling of non-GMO products, which was not required until recently, now seems preferable. Above all, the European farming landscape would have to be overhauled, by defining the geographical areas exclusively devoted to growing one or the other crop. A mammoth task!

Genetically Modified and non-Genetically Modified Food Supply Chains

In the European Union nations, and other countries including Japan, Australia and Malaysia, it is a legal requirement that food products containing genetically modified organism (GMO) materials are labelled as such in order that customers may make informed purchasing decisions. For manufacturers and consumers to be confident about these assertions, systems must be in place along the entire food chain which support the co-existence of GM and non GM materials whilst maintaining a strict segregation between the two. This book is an output of a European Union-funded project entitled "Co-Extra: GM and non-GM food and feed supply chains: their Co-Existence and Traceability". The objective of this ...

Unauthorised GMOs (UGM) and derived materials are not uncommon in products found on the European market. At present there is zero tolerance for UGM in the EU. In most documented cases, the UGM concentration relative to the product in which the UGM material is found, was low. Low level presence will always represent a challenge to analytically based detection, in particular if the UGM is obscured by other GM material. Analytical ad hoc implementation of the zero tolerance for particular UGMs in feed is described in Regulation (EU) No 619/2011. In Europe, GM detection is predominantly achieved with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) derived methods targeting the transgenic construct and insertion...

Genetically Modified Food

This essential collection of essays explores issues relating to Genetically Modified Foods, with an emphasis on exploring world attitudes, rather than American-centric. This allows readers to understand an issue with a universal sensitivity. Essays sources provide viewpoints from Switzerland, India, Asia, South America, European Union, Australia, Philippines, Africa, Nigeria, America, and the United Kingdom. Readers will evaluate attitudes toward genetically modified food around the world. They will look at the impact of genetically modified crops on agriculture and health. Regulation issues are also presented.

Advances in Food Biotechnology

The application of biotechnology in the food sciences has led to an increase in food production and enhanced the quality and safety of food. Food biotechnology is a dynamic field and the continual progress and advances have not only dealt effectively with issues related to food security but also augmented the nutritional and health aspects of food. Advances in Food Biotechnology provides an overview of the latest development in food biotechnology as it relates to safety, quality and security. The seven sections of the book are multidisciplinary and cover the following topics: GMOs and food security issues Applications of enzymes in food processing Fermentation technology Functional food and ...

Global Issues in Food Science and Technology

A selected compilation of writings by IUFoST organization supporters, Global Themes in Food Science and Technology were those identified as representing the most important and relevant subjects facing food scientists and technologists today. Chosen by an international editorial board, these subjects offer insights into current research and developments and were selected to stimulate additional interest and work in these key areas. The International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) is a country-membership organization is the sole global food science and technology organization. It is a voluntary, non-profit association of national food science organizations linking the world's be...

Viruses and Virus Diseases of Poaceae (Gramineae)

Many well-known specialists have contributed to this book which presents for the first time an in-depth look at the viruses, their satellites and the retrotransposons infecting (or occuring in) one plant family: the Poaceae (Gramineae). After molecular and biological descriptions of the viruses to species level, virus diseases are presented by crop: barley, maize, rice, rye, sorghum, sugarcane, triticales, wheats, forage, ornamental and lawn. A detailed index of the viruses and taxonomic lists will help readers in the search for information.

Co-Extra is an FP6 (contract 007158) research program of the priority 5 (Food safety and quality) of the European Commission which started in April 2005 and finishes in September 2009. Its main aim is to provide practical tools to implement coexistence and traceability for the coexistence of supply chains using either GMO, conventional products or organic agriculture derived products. This integrated project completes the two complementary STREPS: SIGMEA working mostly on field coexistence and transcontainer focusing on biocontainment. The coexistence is understood as the ability to farmers to produce the agricultural products they wish, while still enabling the freedom of choice of consumer...
