The present book is the narrative of our work and travels. As in ""Camps and Trails"" I have written it entirely from the sportsman's standpoint and have purposely avoided scientific details which would prove uninteresting or wearisome to the general public... Asia is the most fascinating hunting ground in all the world, not because of the quantity of game to be found there but because of its quality, and scientific importance. Central Asia was the point of origin and distribution for many mammals which inhabit other parts of the earth to-day and the habits and relationships of some of its big game animals are almost unknown. Because of unceasing native persecution, lack of protection, the continued destruction of forests and the ever increasing facilities for transportation to the remote districts of the interior, many of China's most interesting and important forms of wild life are doomed to extermination in the very near future.

The collection consists of handwritten and typewritten letters (some carbon copies). In some letters to his father, Borup describes his experiences on the North Polar expedition. One letter from Edmund Otis Hovey mentions the name "Jesup Land" for Axel Heiberg [Is]land and says there is no authority for using it. Two letters from Hugh J. Lee, who accompanied Peary on his expeditions to Greenland between 1893 and 1895, discuss the conflicting demands of exploration and family. Included are one short handwritten, signed letter from Robert Falcon Scott and one from Lincoln Ellsworth.

Across Mongolian Plains-A Naturalists Account of China's "Great Northwest" is a gripping Asian travel diary by Roy Chapman Andrews. This Asian travelogue is the narrative of our work and travels. "I have written it entirely from the sportsman's standpoint and have purposely avoided scientific details which would prove uninteresting or wearisome to the general public." Roy Chapman Andrews (January 26, 1884 - March 11, 1960) was an American explorer, adventurer and naturalist who became the director of the American Museum of Natural History.[1] He is primarily known for leading a series of expeditions through the politically disturbed China of the early 20th century into the Gobi Desert and Mo...

Under A Lucky Star

All the world knows that Roy Chapman Andrews is the discoverer of the dinosaur Eggs, for these small and fragile relics of an inconceivably remote past fired the public’s imagination and were the sensation of their day. These eggs, however, were only an incident, and by no means the most important incident, in a rich, exciting, and valuable career. Now Andrews looks back over that life, weighs the relative importance of its many chapters, relives the finest moments, and regards with wonder the chance and good fortune that shaped his way. The author’s position as a naturalist is almost unique in that he was both a field operation and museum man, both an explorer and an administrator. His ...
