Molecular Diagnosis and Epidemiology of Human Pathogens

Medical Microbiology deals with the study of microorganisms that colonize or infect humans. It studies the pathogenesis and epidemiology of these microorganisms with practical applications in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases (infectious diseases, infection-related cancer, dysbiosis related diseases, etc.,). In the past two decades, its expansion is essentially due to the great advances in related fields such as immunology, genetics, bioinformatics, science, technology, engineering and mathematics. New scientific knowledge and understanding make possible new applications. Nevertheless, it becomes a challenge due to lack of expertise to analyze fast-growing data and to translate...

Using Mathematics to Understand Biological Complexity

This volume tackles a variety of biological and medical questions using mathematical models to understand complex system dynamics. Working in collaborative teams of six, each with a senior research mentor, researchers developed new mathematical models to address questions in a range of application areas. Topics include retinal degeneration, biopolymer dynamics, the topological structure of DNA, ensemble analysis, multidrug-resistant organisms, tumor growth modeling, and geospatial modeling of malaria. The work is the result of newly formed collaborative groups begun during the Collaborative Workshop for Women in Mathematical Biology hosted by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics at UCLA in June 2019. Previous workshops in this series have occurred at IMA, NIMBioS, and MBI.

Pandemics and Resilience: Lessons we should have learned from Zika

The aim of the book was to produce the most comprehensive examination of a pandemic that has ever been attempted. By cataloging the full extent of the Zika pandemic, this book will be the most complete history and epistemic contextualization ever attempted to date. The work should function as the primary source for students, researchers, and scholars who need information about the Zika pandemic. This book examines the technical literature, digital and popular literature, and online materials to fully contextualize this event and provide a bona fide record of this event and its implications for the future. It is somewhat serendipitous that while this work was underway, we are going through an...

Ecological field studies were carried out in farmyards in Spain and Portugal. When population composition of C. imicola was determined alongside host preference, it was found that although C. imicola are present in farms around cows, domestic fowl and pigs, they are present in higher numbers, comprise a higher total % of Culicoides caught and are present in a more stable population around horses. These results have serious implications for the spread of AHSV in these regions of Iberia where equestrian stud farms, producing quality polo and racing horses, play a significant part in the economy of the area.
