Engineering Rock Mass Classifications

This is the first authoritative reference on rock mass classification, consolidating into one handy source information once widely scattered throughout the literature. It includes new, previously unpublished material and case histories, presents the fundamental concepts of classification schemes, and critically appraises their practical application in industrial projects such as tunneling and mining.

The first comprehensive treatment of the subject of design methodology in rock engineering, this book emphasizes that a good designer needs not only knowledge for designing (technical knowledge) but also must have knowledge about designing (an appropriate process to follow). Design methodology is today recognized in most fields as crucial to the success of a new product, process, or construction project. This unique book starts with an appraisal of current trends concerning global design activities and competitiveness and gives an insight into how designers design. The state of the art in engineering design is given with a detailed exposé of all significant design theories and methodologies...

This practical and design-oriented book focuses on ground characterization and structural calculation, as part of the active structural design methodology. With a focus on rock tunnelling it offers a comprehensive rather than a topic-based perspective, deriving sound tunnel design criteria and methods from basic principles. Ground characterization includes excavations, site investigation, and in situ stress determination, culminating in geotechnical classifications. The book then deals with various construction methods and their appropriate calculations, which range from constitutive models for the stress-strain behaviour of an excavation and tunnel support elements to a full stress–strain...

Rock Mechanics

This new edition has been completely revised to reflect the notable innovations in mining engineering and the remarkable developments in the science of rock mechanics and the practice of rock angineering taht have taken place over the last two decades. Although "Rock Mechanics for Underground Mining" addresses many of the rock mechanics issues that arise in underground mining engineering, it is not a text exclusively for mining applications. Based on extensive professional research and teaching experience, this book will provide an authoratative and comprehensive text for final year undergraduates and commencing postgraduate stydents. For profesional practitioners, not only will it be of interests to mining and geological engineers, but also to civil engineers, structural mining geologists and geophysicists as a standard work for professional reference purposes.

Tunnel Design by Rock Mass Classifications

This report discusses tunnel design procedures based on various rock mass classification systems. A comparison is made between the tunnel support design based on the classical Terzaghi rock load method and the support selection based on the RSR Concept, the Geomechanics Classification, and the Q-System. These classification systems are described in detail and guidelines are given for step-by-step application of the three methods. Using an actual tunnel case history, an evaluation is made of the current design practice by comparing it with the design approaches involving the three rock mass classification systems. It is concluded that the current design practice may lead to overdesign of support, and recommendations are made for improved procedures that would ensure the construction of safe and more economical rock tunnels. Finally, a few areas are identified where more research would benefit the current tunnel design practice.
