This book is the first detailed study of the causes of de-radicalization in armed Islamist movements. It is based on frontline research that includes interviews with Jihadist leaders, mid-ranking commanders, and young sympathizers, as well as former security and intelligence officers and state officials. Additionally, it is also the first book to analyze the particular conditions under which successful de-radicalization can take place. The current literature on Islamist movements attempts to explain two principal issues: their support of violence (radicalization) and their changing attitudes towards democracy and democratization (moderation). However, the reasons behind renouncing (behaviour...

First Published in 1982. Middle Eastern Studies first appeared in 1964. The purpose of the Journal was the promotion of the study of the Middle East and North Africa since the end of the eighteenth century, and that it aimed to take within its ambit the political, economic, religious and legal history of the area, its literature, social geography, sociology and anthropology. That the Journal, now in its fourteenth volume, has been able to conform to this programme is due to its contributors who, over the years, have kept it supplied with a constant and abundant flow of articles on the various subjects here enumerated. This selection of articles on Palestine and Israel in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, drawn from its first thirteen volumes, illustrates the great variety of subjects which authors have thought worth investigating, and the diversity of approaches which they have adopted. This book also shows that an appreciable part of the Journal, in terms simply of volume, has been devoted throughout to Palestine and Israel.

The Druzes in the Jewish State

Following the war of 1948 Palestine's Druzes became part of the state of Israel. Overwhelmingly rural, they sought to safeguard their community's age-old ethnic independence by holding on to their traditional ethno-religious particularism. Ethnicity and ethnic issues, however, were ready tools for the Zionists in the pursuit of their policy aims vis-à-vis the state's Arab population. Central among these was the cooptation of part of the Druze elite in an obvious effort to alienate the Druzes from the other Arabs - creating "good" Arabs and "bad" Arabs served the Jewish state as a foil for its ongoing policy of dispossession and control. The author painstakingly documents the political, social and economic factors that ensured the "success" of these Zionist policies, but concludes that the fissured identity of Israel's Druzes today bespeaks a feeling of musiba, tragedy, within the community itself.
