Social Justice in Multicultural Settings

This book presents insights into social justice issues through the work of educators in Israel, the US, the UK, Italy, Canada, Turkey and Kazakhstan. Each chapter provides local or global theoretical insights, and these combine to provide a rich international perspective. The book offers practical strategies for the classroom, methods of teaching social justice to future teachers in various curriculum areas, and knowledge for researchers and those working in higher education. The book is unusual in its combination of local and international perspectives, practical and theoretical wisdom, and its inclusion of a variety of voices. Readers will gain new insight into concepts like radical pedagogy, interculturalism, multiculturalism, failed citizenship and cultural identity.

First Published in 1982. Middle Eastern Studies first appeared in 1964. The purpose of the Journal was the promotion of the study of the Middle East and North Africa since the end of the eighteenth century, and that it aimed to take within its ambit the political, economic, religious and legal history of the area, its literature, social geography, sociology and anthropology. That the Journal, now in its fourteenth volume, has been able to conform to this programme is due to its contributors who, over the years, have kept it supplied with a constant and abundant flow of articles on the various subjects here enumerated. This selection of articles on Palestine and Israel in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, drawn from its first thirteen volumes, illustrates the great variety of subjects which authors have thought worth investigating, and the diversity of approaches which they have adopted. This book also shows that an appreciable part of the Journal, in terms simply of volume, has been devoted throughout to Palestine and Israel.

This book is the first detailed study of the causes of de-radicalization in armed Islamist movements. It is based on frontline research that includes interviews with Jihadist leaders, mid-ranking commanders, and young sympathizers, as well as former security and intelligence officers and state officials. Additionally, it is also the first book to analyze the particular conditions under which successful de-radicalization can take place. The current literature on Islamist movements attempts to explain two principal issues: their support of violence (radicalization) and their changing attitudes towards democracy and democratization (moderation). However, the reasons behind renouncing (behaviour...

Air Power and the Arab World 1909-1955

Volume 1 of War in Ukraine focuses on the armed formations of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), the largest of the two separatist entities in the east of Ukraine. Armed formations of the Donetsk People’s Republic aims to provide an overview of their formation in 2014, their status up to the end of February 2022, and combat equipment, while also exploring issues around identity and symbology. Loosely confederated with the armed formations of the neighbouring Luhansk People’s Republic into the so-called ‘United Armed Forces of Novorossiya’, in reality the armed formations of the Donetsk People’s Republic have retained a degree of autonomy over their units and planning. Often dismissed...

Air Power and the Arab World, 1909-1955

This entry in the MiddleEast@War series is illustrated with abundant photographs from previously unused, or very rarely used, private and official sources. Air Power and the Arab World, 1909–1955 Volume 10 continues the story of the men and machines of the first half-century of military aviation in the Arab world. It tells the story of the first two weeks of the first of the Arab-Israeli Wars – also known as the Palestine War – in May 1948. Whilst part of an ongoing series, this volume stands alone as a history of the period covered. By that time, in Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan, newly-independent Syria, Lebanon, and, to a lesser extent, Saudi Arabia, significant efforts had already been m...

This laudable work offers a study, translation and partial edition of one of the most important early Mamluk sources and its author. In addition to the work's contribution to Mamluk history, it also makes a significant contribution towards the ultimate goal of having the key texts of early Mamluk historiography accessible to scholars. In this first volume the life and work of al-Yūnīnī (d. 1326), the textual history of his Chronicle, its historiographic significance and textual filiation with other independent sources are presented and discussed.
