This collection of 52 papers presents the state-of-the-art of Oceanology of China Seas, including Yellow Sea, East China Sea and South China Sea. The papers are published in two volumes comprising six parts: Volume 1: Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry and Marine Biology. Volume 2: Marine Geology, Coastal Research and Marine Physics and Technology. The purpose of this book is to introduce to the world the most representative research of Chinese oceanographers and provide marine developers with a significant reference work. For marine scientists and developers at oceanographic institutions, academia and naval research establishments. It will also be of value to the oil company geologist having an interest in the exploration of China Seas.
Collected in this special volume are 36 invited and contributed papers first presented at the Second Asian Pacific Phycological Forum held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong at the turn of the century. These papers were subsequently updated to bring to fore the latest development in algal research in the Asian Pacific Region. This volume thus provides one of the most comprehensive pictures of advances in algal research in this part of the world.
Seven case studies are presented on commercial seaweed resources; five on wild crops, respectively Ascophyllum nodosum, Chondrus crispus, Gelidium, Laminaria longicruris and Macrocystis, are provided along with case studies of the farmed crops of Eucheuma and Laminaria japonica . Individually the cases range from descriptions of the wild crops and their management to the managed production of farmed crops including, in several examples, some information on economics and/or processing. These initial seven cases range from those emphasizing but one species from but one part of one country, to studies of a genus as it occurs commercially throughout the world.
