Reflex Epilepsies: progress in understanding
Reflex epilepsies can provide a qualitative and quantitative viewpoint of the complexities of ictogenesis. The various chapters in this book examine the factors that can trigger a seizure, such as hot water, food, contact and movement, music and emotions. The relationship between several reflex epilepsy mechanisms and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy is discussed along with the significance of their occurrence in syndromes, enhancing our understanding of current epilepsy nosology. The conventional dichotomy appears outdated, while functional studies of trigger mechanisms are moving more towards central nervous system subsets acting as pathological networks that produce seizures in generalized and focal epilepsies.
The Causes of Epilepsy
Causation is an aspect of epilepsy neglected in the scientific literature and in the conceptualization of epilepsy at a clinical and experimental level. It was to remedy this deficiency that this book was conceived. The book opens with a draft etiological classification that goes some way to filling the nosological void. The book is divided into four etiological categories: idiopathic, symptomatic, cryptogenic, and provoked epilepsies. Each chapter considers topics in a consistent fashion, dealing with the phenomenon of epilepsy in each etiology, including its epidemiology, clinical features and prognosis, and any specific aspects of treatment. The book is a comprehensive reference work, a catalogue of all important causes of epilepsy, and a clinical tool for all clinicians dealing with patients who have epilepsy. It is aimed at epileptologists and neurologists and provides a distillation of knowledge in a form that is helpful in the clinical setting.
Virgil Thomson's Musical Portraits
From 1928 until his death in 1989, Virgil Thomson, Dean of American Composers, distinguished critic and author, composed musical portraits of people. Though he was not the first composer to do so, the seriousness of his working methods and the quantity of his output (140 in all) make Thomson's practice of musical portraiture unique. Anthony Tommasini's book is based on his extensive interviews with Virgil Thomson, his examination of Thomson's manuscripts and documents, and his correspondences with over sixty subjects of Thomson portraits (the "still-available sitters," as Thomson called them). Earlier examples of musical portraits are examined, as well as the literary portraits of Gertrude Stein, works which inspired Thomson to experiment with portraiture in music.
