The Political Economy of Israel
This book constitutes the first attempt at a comprehensive description, history, and analysis of Israel's economy. Plessner examines events of the past two decades and advances the hypothesis that problems within the Israeli economy can be explained by the extent of its departure from the institutions and rules that govern predominantly market economies. He argues that Israel is unusual in that it affords an opportunity to analyze a socialized economy embedded in a democratic society. Individual chapters describe Israel's economic growth and stagnation, the government's domination of capital and credit markets, and the absence of a truly independent private sector. The concluding chapter evaluates the stabilization program of the 1980s and its aftermath and provides a prognosis for the future. Told within the framework of the story of Zionism and the creation of the Jewish state, this book answers the question of why the Israeli economy finds itself today in the same state in which it has languished since 1973.

Constitutionalism
In Israel today there is increasingly vigorous support for the framing of a constitution. At the same time there is almost no recognition that in forty years Israel has acquired an almost complete set of basic laws that form a constitution. The aims of this volume are threefold: to inform the Israeli public and the world as to what exists and consider what still is needed in the way of a constitution; to enter constitutionalism firmly on the Israeli public agenda; and to learn from the American experience. The author shows that Israel's constitution is more than anything else a modern adaptation of an ancient constitution. The State of Israel, The Land of Israel
Sandler contends that the impact of the nation in foreign policy is not synonymous with that of the State. Understanding the effect of the nation is important because of the contemporary reawakening of primordial national aspirations. This study is designed to test these views by examining nation-centered concerns in foreign policy as practiced within Israel. It reviews and analyzes the roots of the territorial dimension in Israeli foreign policy since the establishment of the state up to the present; the impact of Israeli domestic politics; and the rise and fall of ethnonationalism in Israeli foreign policy. As such, the work is of concern to all students of Israeli politics and foreign policy and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
