A rare picture by a Polish physician whose diary depicted how noncombatants coped with life in German-occupied eastern Poland.
Red Shadow
On July 6, 1944, the Soviet army drove the German occupying forces from the small town of Szczebrzeszyn in eastern Poland. Sadly, it soon became clear that this "liberation" was simply the beginning of a new occupation. As the Polish people struggled against the Soviets, Dr. Zygmunt Klukowski, superintendent of the county hospital in Szczebrzeszyn, was in the thick of the action, meeting with partisan fighters and helping to plot and record their activities. All the while, he kept a meticulous secret diary of life under the Soviet occupation, which for him included two prison terms for "crimes against the people." Many of his friends died, and his own son Tadeusz was executed for antigovernment activities. Dr. Klukowski's diary - located in 1991 after an extensive search and translated by his son George and grandson Andrew - is a vivid recounting of the Polish resistance, marked by tragedy, triumph, and the strong will of the people in the face of brutal occupation.

Poland's Holocaust
With the end of World War I, a new Republic of Poland emerged on the maps of Europe, made up of some of the territory from the first Polish Republic, including Wolyn and Wilno, and significant parts of Belarus, Upper Silesia, Eastern Galicia, and East Prussia. The resulting conglomeration of ethnic groups left many substantial minorities wanting independence. The approach of World War II provided the minorities' leaders a new opportunity in their nationalist movements, and many sided with one or the other of Poland's two enemies--the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany--in hopes of achieving their goals at the expense of Poland and its people. Based on primary and secondary sources in numerous languages (including Polish, German, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Russian and English), this work examines the roles of the ethnic minorities in the collapse of the Republic and in the atrocities that occurred under the occupying troops. The Polish government's response to mounting ethnic tensions in the prewar era and its conduct of the war effort are also examined.
