“La presente investigación pretende responder a una perspectiva actual acerca del fenómeno del cambio religioso, como tema que ha estado presente en la preocupación de una gran cantidad de estudios de corte sociológico y antropológico. El interés general es abordar los procesos de vivencia de la religiosidad y sus implicaciones con otros ámbitos de la sociedad y la cultura en espacios tendientes a la diversidad religiosa, como es el caso del municipio de Amatenango del Valle, donde se llevó a cabo este estudio. Este trabajo, se suma a la discusión, hoy día en boga, en la que nos preguntamos acerca de la posible tendencia a la pluralización religiosa en nuestro país. Si bien, en una región como Latinoamérica, podríamos decir que la diversidad religiosa ha estado presente, aun desde la época precolombina, esta se ha intensificado, principalmente a partir de la segunda década de los años 1850 con la aparición y expansión de numerosos grupos protestantes y evangélicos, y con ello un posible fenómeno de coexistencia de las muy distintas opciones y credos”.

En la sociedad contemporánea el debilitamiento del Estado, la Iglesia y la creciente migración e individualización propias de la modernidad, han abonado a la fragmentación y debilitamiento de comunidades de pertenencia. Sin embargo, continúa permeando la necesidad de compartir un sistema de creencias y prácticas con una colectividad, lo cual ha dado lugar a la emergencia de formas alternas de organización e identificación social. Las cuales son definidas en este trabajo a través de la apropiación contemporánea de tradiciones imaginadas como ancestrales, desde las cuales los sujetos construyen referentes sociales, culturales, etnonacionales y políticos comunes, que les permitan percibirse como pertenecientes a una comunidad imaginada desde los márgenes. Este estudio consiste en un análisis comparativo de las apropiaciones que hacen de la tradición de la danza azteca, tres agrupaciones establecidas en la frontera entre California y Baja California.
