Struggle and Survival under Authoritarianism in Turkey

After the Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power in Turkey in 2002, the AKP grew into an authoritarian government as it politically and culturally oppressed citizens and institutions. In Struggle and Survival under Authoritarianism in Turkey: Theatre under Threat, Burcu Yasemin Şeybenargues thattheatre was deliberately targeted because theatre institutions and companies embodied the cultural program of the statist and Kemalist cultural policy that has continually excluded Muslims and various religious and ethnic minorities. Although the AKP claimed to be replacing the top-down, discriminatory, and secular statist and Kemalist theatre system with a facilitative and inclusive one, the AKP gradually adapted a more authoritarian system, as evidenced by their efforts to close and defund theatres, ban plays, and force theatre artists to exile. Despite the AKP’s increasing oppression, Şeybenstudies contemporary Turkish theatre to establish that a few theatre institutions, companies, and artists have managed to survive and develop democratic cultural policies and strategies that will outlive the AKP government.

Eleştirilere ve İddialara Karşı CHP'yi Savunmak - I

A Genocide in the Making?

The Turkish government under the Erdoğan regime is undertaking a brutal crackdown against the participants of a civic group, namely the Gülen movement, also known as the Hizmet (service) movement, with the deliberate intention of destroying this social group, in whole or in part. In this extensive research, Dr. Keneş argues that this crackdown is filled with violations that may be classified at the very least as crimes against humanity and could very well be the harbinger of what comes next in terms of a full-scale genocide to exterminate thousands of innocent people. Keneş exemplifies many of these crimes and scales them against the genocide criteria according to definitions and norms accepted by United Nations and field experts. Given that the international community has historically downplayed the early signs of genocidal acts and thus failed to prevent such crimes many times before, it is necessary to be on the alert before the Erdoğan regime goes that far. A Genocide in the Making? is a unique volume that loudly cries out to the world this highly probable risk before it is too late.

The Day Turkey Stood Still

On May 2, 1999, Merve Kavakci walked into the Turkish Grand National Assembly to take her oath of office as a member of Turkish Parliament, while wearing her Islamic headscarf (hijab) which is banned for civil servants in secular Turkey. A near riot ensued, and the Prime Minister told the crowd to 'put this woman in her place.' Since then, Kavakci has become an outspoken critic of Turkey's secularization policy, travelling the globe in support of Muslim women's rights, especially regarding the hijab, which she promotes as a symbol of female empowerment. The Day Turkey Stood Still is a unique behind-the-scenes story of the first headscarved woman to be elected into the Turkish Parliament and ...

Muktedir: Türk Sağ Geleneği ve Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

Usta, hoca, RTE, Tayyip, diktatör, sultan, dünya lideri, Davos fatihi, uzun adam… Hangi lakabıyla, nasıl anılırsa anılsın, olumlu-olumsuz nasıl görülürse görülsün, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’ın, Türkiye’nin siyasal tarihine damgasını vuran bir lider olduğu kesin. İslâmcı Milli Görüş’ün “muhafazakâr demokratlık” söylemine geçişi, Türkiye’nin neoliberal toplumsal ve ekonomik dönüşümü, “askerî vesayet” -demokrasi- otoriter rejim tartışmaları, onu hesaba katmadan anlaşılamaz. The Rise of Political Islam

The rise of political Islam in the Middle East region and elsewhere, in the post-Cold War era, is one of the key geopolitical phenomena of our time. Political Islam tends to challenge the status quo culturally, socially, and more important, politically. This important new book explores the issue deeply, focusing particularly on real or perceived external threats to social identity; a neglected dimension of political Islam. Three cases are examined, those of Turkey, Egypt, and Algeria, where political Islam has challenged, sometimes quite seriously, the secular state structure. Many policy implications, in terms of more effectively coping with these politico-religious challenges, are made by the study. With its focus on understanding the link between social identity and religiously-driven social and political conflicts, the book will be a unique and valuable resource for policy advisors and think tanks, and all researchers, students, and scholars working on religiously-driven conflicts.

Politics, Parties, and Elections in Turkey

The Turkish party system has undergone significant changes since the 1940s, moving from a two-party system to one encompassing nineteen parties - and resulting in a highly fragmented parliament. The contributors to this volume assess the intertwined effects of party fragmentation and voter volatility in Turkey. Presenting a wealth of data, they illuminate the trajectory of democratic consolidation, as well as underlying issues of representation, participation, and govern-ability.

EU Influence Beyond Conditionality

This book presents an in-depth analysis of the role played by the EU accession process in Turkey’s democratic evolution and in the empowerment of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the early 2000s. Often moving against the grain of consolidated analytical positions, the author finds that the accession process can have a critical impact on the political evolution and institutional setting of an aspiring member state that goes well beyond the simple Europeanization process (or EU accession conditionality). In the case of Turkey, that process created the essential conditions and environment for the country’s political modernization by helping the emergence of a “periphery” (incl...
