Contributions to Hardware and Software Reliability

Contributions to Hardware and Software Reliability

With better computing facilities now available, there is an ever-increasing need to ensure that elegant theoretical results on hardware reliability are computationally available. This book discusses those aspects which have relevance to computing systems and those where numerical computation was a problem. It is also well known that nearly 70% of the cost goes into software development and hence software reliability assumes special importance. The book not only gives an extensive review of the literature on software reliability but also provides direction in developing models which are flexible and can be used in a variety of testing environments. Besides, several alternative formulations of the release time problem are discussed along with variants such as allocation of testing effort resources to different modules of the software, or the testing effort control problem. Software reliability has now emerged as an independent discipline and requires a strong partnership between computer scientists, statisticians and operational researchers. This aspect is broadly highlighted in the book.

This volume completes the survey of the ca. 400 species of springtails, which can be found in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, the Faroes and the Arctic Islands and includes the sections Entomobryomorpha and Symphypleona. The first volume, published in 1998, covered Poduromorpha. Identification keys and full descriptions of the species are richly illustrated by line drawings. Photos are provided for some species displaying characteristic patterns of pigmentation. New diagnostic characters, including sensillary chaetotaxy and details of the mouth apparatus, are introduced. With the appearence of this book soil scientists and the interested amateur have now a modern tool to identify all species of Nordic springtails. In addition the habitat preferences and geographical distribuition are summarised. The book will be of general interest to everyone working on springtail identification.

Abstract "The available literature data on the species diversity and geographical distribution of Collembola in Canada and Alaska is summarized. In total, the checklist covers 541 named species of Collembola. This includes 475 species in 135 genera from 24 families recorded from Canada, as well as 241 species in 75 genera from 19 families reported from Alaska. For each species the current name, basionym with a full reference, records for different provinces and territories with their authorships, and general distributional ranges are given. Taxonomic remarks have been added when necessary. The checklist is based on 536 references (including 262 with Canadian records) published up to May 2018 and on a number of publicly available online resources. Keywords: Collembola, springtails, species list, taxonomic remarks, distribution, Canada, Alaska, Collembola"--Page 6.

The repair and management of inguinal hernias represents a significant part of the general surgeon's workload. It was therefore inevitable that following the success of laparoscopic cholysysectomy, surgeons would develop a procedure for repairing inguinal hernias laparoscopically. This book provides the first comprehensive account of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. The Editors' aim has been to give step-by-step guidance to each operative procedure discussed with reference to long term results. One of the biggest problems facing surgeons learning new laparoscopic procedures is an understanding and orientation of basic anatomy when viewed through the laparoscope. This issue is discussed at length with guidance on how to avoid the common pitfalls. Final chapters look at the advantages and disadvantages of the Lichtenstein open mesh hernia repair approach, safety and properties of non-absorbal mesh with the last chapters concentrating on laparoscopic suture repair and the new mini hernia operation.
