The Making of Shia Ayatollahs

The Making of Shia Ayatollahs offers both insider and outsider views of how a scholar becomes an Ayatollah in Shia Islam, how ayatollahs suggest diverse perspectives on faith, and how the grand ayatollahs are recognized by a balance of many factors including piety, scholarship, popularity and networking. This book consists of two parts. The first begins with the core value of knowledge in Islam and the Ulama’s interpretation of jurisprudence and the subjects, values, and methodology they have developed and are applying to challenges found in the faithful practices in modern life. The author reveals the mechanisms of madrasa, hawza, their curricula, and the recognition of a scholar as an ay...

Risalah Sayr Wa Suluk

This book is 'Allamah Hasan Mustafawi's exposition of the known treatise on mystical wayfaring (Risaleh-ye Sayr wa Suluk) widely attributed to Sayyid Mahdi Bahr al-Ulum al-Burujirdi al-Najafi (died 1212 AH/1797-98). Though concise, this book has made clear all stages and stations of mystical wayfaring and the degrees of perfection of the human soul in the best and most comprehensive mode of expression and substantiated by holy Qur'anic verses, noble traditions (aḥādīth), and rational proofs. As 'Allamah Mustafawi describes, "This noble treatise, which in my manuscript is entitled Tuhfat al-Muluk fī 's-Sayr wa 's-Suluk and in other manuscripts as Risalah fi 's-Sayr wa 's-Suluk, has been ...

Scientific Approach in Translating and Interpreting the Qur'an and Traditions

No doubt, the greatest service in the station of servitude ('ubūdiyyah) is to propagate, disseminate and state the concepts, gnosis, truths, and decrees of the Noble Qur'an and the words and traditions reported from the prophets and pure and immaculate saints (awliyā') ('a). Of course, this must be done while observing all the conditions and necessary features so that the divine truths do not deviate from their own course, and what are meant and implied in those words be clarified, understood and implemented. In this treatise, 'Allamah Mustafawi points out, and then discusses and investigates, the necessary conditions and features which must be faithfully observed and carefully considered in the pursuit of translation, exegesis, elucidation, and explanation of the verses of the Noble Qur'an and the holy traditions and narrations. And since its author has also works on the exegesis of the Noble Qur'an and ḥadīth, he also discusses and examines those works as much as they are related to the subjects of the treatise.

Horse of Karbala is a study of Muharram rituals and interfaith relations in three locations in India: Ladakh, Darjeeling, and Hyderabad. These rituals commemorate an event of vital importance to Shia Muslims: the seventh-century death of the Imam Husain, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the battlefield of Karbala in Iraq. Pinault examines three different forms of ritual commemoration of Husain's death - poetry-recital and self-flagellation in Hyderabad; stick-fighting in Darjeeling; and the 'Horse of Karbala' procession, in which a stallion representing the mount ridden in battle by Husain is made the center of a public parade in Ladakh and other Indian localities. The book looks at how publicly staged rituals serve to mediate communal relations: in Hyderabad and Darjeeling, between Muslim and Hindu populations; in Ladakh, between Muslims and Buddhists. Attention is also given to controversies within Muslim communities over issues related to Muharram such as the belief in intercession by the Karbala Martyrs on behalf of individual believers.

The Scale of Wisdom is a collectionof narrations from the honourable Prophet of Islam and the Twelve Imams (AS). This compendium of Shi'a hadith aims at presenting traditions which are central to understanding the teachings of the Holy Qur'an and the ethical foundations of Islam. The ten-volume edition, for which the present volume serves as an abridged edition, was first published in March 1983 in Arabic. The remarkable reception of Mizal al-Hikmah by researchers in the Islamic world shows the keen interest of the new generation of scholars in the pure knowledge of Islam. To simplify the use of this collection, a selection of its most important narrations was publilshed in 1987. The present work is the translation of this Arabic selection and has undergone several years of appraisal and reappraisal by a group of translators at the Islamic College in London in order to make this work accessible to a wider audience.

The Divine Guide in Early Shi'ism

The Imam, the Divine Guide, is the central point around which the Shi'ite religion turns. The power of Shi'ism comes from the actions of the Imam. This title is reserved exclusively for the sucessors of the prophets in their mission. The author shows that from the beginning of Shi'ite Islam until the tenth century, the Imam was primarily a master of knowledge with supernatural powers, not a jurist theologian. The Imam is the threshold through which God and the creatures communicate. He is thus a cosmic necessity, the key and the center of the universal economy of the sacred. The author presents Shi'ism as a religion founded on double dimensions where the role of the leader remains constantly...
