MUSLIMS ON EDUCATION
This report is the result of a series of brain-storming sessions organized by the AMSS (UK) and FAIR. The issues raised were drafted into an initial report written by Tarek El Diwany and revised by Christopher Allen. Copies were subsequently circulated to a number of educationists for review. We also acknowledge the contribution of all those involved in the initiation, discussion and review stages of the project as well as all those who offered valuable comments and amendments to the initial draft, and those who, either directly or indirectly, contributed to the final production of this report. Islam, Christianity and Pluralism
Islam’s brilliant contributions to science, art, and culture, are a timeless and precious heritage, which should be historically preserved for future generations. The great achievements of Muslim scholars are rarely if at all acknowledged in formal education, and today their identity, origins and impact remain largely obscure. This collection of papers aims to give readers a brief introduction to the intellectual history of Muslims and the contributions that eminent Muslim scholars have made in certain specific fields of knowledge including basic and applied physical and biological sciences, medicine, legal and political theories and practices, economic and financial concepts, models, and institutions, etc. The preservation of civilization necessitates a better understanding, sharing, and recognition of our common human heritage. Given today’s widespread negative stereotyping and falsely generated misunderstanding of Islam and Muslims, the publication of these papers on “Muslim Contributions to World Civilization” is vital to help repair the wrong that is being perpetrated and restore the historical truth, which is being distorted.
Toward a Muslim Social Contract in Europe
In this, the second Memorial lecture in honour of Sheikh Zaki Badawi, Dr. Mustafa Ceric, Grand Mufti of Bosnia-Hercegovina, examines one of the most important issues facing Muslim communities in Europe today; how to participate actively and faithfully in modern European society. Dr. Ceric introduces the concept of a Muslim Social Contract theorizing on its value, philosophical and religious foundations, as well as wider implications for Muslims in Europe. It is in essence a theory of mutual obligations advocating positive engagement bu Muslims on a sociopolitical as well as intellectual level in wider European society.
Muslims in the UK
Includes four policy papers focusing on Muslims in the UK. The papers address education, employment, justice, and equality. With their specific focus, the papers highlight how issues affect Muslims specifically, and make recommendations targeted to address those specificities, thus contributing to enriching the policy process. This publication is a follow up to the respective chapter in the EUMAP 2002 report "Monitoring Minority Protection in the EU." The 2002 report was a snap shot of the situation of Muslims, in terms of minority rights, and their experiences of discrimination and disadvantage.
Islamophobia
Islamophobia has been on the rise since September 11, as seen in countless cases of discrimination, racism, hate speeches, physical attacks, and anti-Muslim campaigns. The 2006 Danish cartoon crisis and the controversy surrounding Pope Benedict XVI's Regensburg speech have underscored the urgency of such issues as image-making, multiculturalism, freedom of expression, respect for religious symbols, and interfaith relations.
