This book reviews the recent evolutions of cities in the world according to entirely revised theoretical fundamentals of urban systems. It relies on a vision of cities sharing common dynamic features as co-evolving entities in complex systems. Systems of cities that are interdependent in their evolutions are characterized in the context of that dynamics. They are identified on various geographical scales—worldwide, regional, or national. Each system exhibits peculiarities that are related to its demographic, economic, and geopolitical history, and that are underlined by the systematic comparison of continental and regional urban systems, following a common template throughout the book. Rental Housing Wanted

This book highlights the importance of renting and its potential to help solve the most pressing housing problems in Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, 1 in 5 households in the region rent their homes, a trend which is most prevalent among the fastest-growing segments of the population, such as young people, single-person households and divorced people. This alternative can therefore help satisfy demand preferences and create greater residential mobility. Also, the quality of rented property is often similar to that of formal homes, even for households in the lowest income quintiles, proving it is an efficient and cost-effective alternative for resolving the qualitative and quantitative housing deficits in the region, suggesting that housing policies linked to better planning and improved territorial organization can lead to more dense, compact cities. For these reasons, the rental market may become a key instrument to compliment the region's housing policy.

Transformative Innovation for Sustainable Human Settlements

This book uses the transformative innovation policy (TIP) as a lens to show how innovative processes, practices and systems could address critical challenges and facilitate the delivery of sustainable human settlements in South Africa. The TIP approach shows that addressing societal problems is not a function of a technical solution within a government department but one that requires partnership with multiple stakeholders. The book argues that it is essential to understand and embrace innovation policy that is transformative and responds to the social and environmental needs at local, provincial and national levels. It demonstrates that innovation policy should focus on transforming the soc...

Comprehending the Complexity of Countries

This book argues for computer-aided collaborative country research based on the science of complex and dynamic systems. It provides an in-depth discussion of systems and computer science, concluding that proper understanding of a country is only possible if a genuinely interdisciplinary and truly international approach is taken; one that is based on complexity science and supported by computer science. Country studies should be carefully designed and collaboratively carried out, and a new generation of country students should pay more attention to the fast growing potential of digitized and electronically connected libraries. In this frenzied age of globalization, foreign policy makers may – to the benefit of a better world – profit from the radically new country studies pleaded for in the book. Its author emphasizes that reductionism and holism are not antagonistic but complementary, arguing that parts are always parts of a whole and a whole has always parts.

International Perspectives of Crime Prevention 3

The German Congress on Crime Prevention (GCOCP) is an annual event that takes place since 1995 in different German cities and targets all areas of crime prevention. Since its foundation the GCOCP has been open to an international audience with a growing number of non-German speaking participants joining. To give the international guests their own discussion forum, the Annual International Forum (AIF) within the GCOCP was established in 2007. For non-German guests this event offers lectures in English language as well as other activities within the GCOCP that are translated simultaneously. This book reflects the input and output of the 3rd Annual International Forum 2009 which took place 8th and 9th of June 2009 in Hanover (state of Lower Saxony). This book contains lectures of the GCOCP and AIF as well as a contribution from a partner organisation of the congress. The articles reflect worldwide views on crime prevention and criminal policy as well as the current status, discussion, research and projects in crime prevention from different countries, Europe and the world. Also the Hanover Declaration is included, a report about the key findings of the congress.

Drug Abuse

Presents the results of a number of epidemiologic studies designed to assess the extent of the drug abuse problem in the Americas and identify lines of preventive action. The book has two parts. The first is a multi-authored collection of studies focused on the epidemiologic characteristics of the drug abuse epidemic. Studies fall into three main groups. The first provides a sample of current research designed to gauge the extent of the drug abuse problem and determine why governments are so often unprepared to respond in effective ways. The second group explores methodologies used in drug abuse research and points out the necessity of developing alternative epidemiologic surveillance systems. Papers in the third group, which considers the evaluation of preventive programmes, attempt to determine which preventive strategies are most effective and to which groups they should be directed.

Reframing Globalization After COVID-19

The pandemic has deepened existing trends in the international system, in particular the readjustment of alliances between nations and between regions. As spheres of influence disintegrate and reform, so national and regional security policies will change in unforeseen ways notwithstanding that individual state self-preservation will dominate policy choice. Three major dimensions are addressed. The first dimension is International Relations and Economy. The coronavirus has accelerated a global economic crisis comparable to those of 1929, 1987 and 2008. Are the major economic trading blocs moving to a war economy, and who might win or lose in this context? The second dimension of analysis is ...
