Rental Housing Wanted
This book highlights the importance of renting and its potential to help solve the most pressing housing problems in Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, 1 in 5 households in the region rent their homes, a trend which is most prevalent among the fastest-growing segments of the population, such as young people, single-person households and divorced people. This alternative can therefore help satisfy demand preferences and create greater residential mobility. Also, the quality of rented property is often similar to that of formal homes, even for households in the lowest income quintiles, proving it is an efficient and cost-effective alternative for resolving the qualitative and quantitative housing deficits in the region, suggesting that housing policies linked to better planning and improved territorial organization can lead to more dense, compact cities. For these reasons, the rental market may become a key instrument to compliment the region's housing policy.

The German Congress on Crime Prevention (GCOCP) is an annual event that takes place since 1995 in different German cities and targets all areas of crime prevention. Since its foundation the GCOCP has been open to an international audience with a growing number of non-German speaking participants joining. To give the international guests their own discussion forum, the Annual International Forum (AIF) within the GCOCP was established in 2007. For non-German guests this event offers lectures in English language as well as other activities within the GCOCP that are translated simultaneously. This book reflects the input and output of the 3rd Annual International Forum 2009 which took place 8th and 9th of June 2009 in Hanover (state of Lower Saxony). This book contains lectures of the GCOCP and AIF as well as a contribution from a partner organisation of the congress. The articles reflect worldwide views on crime prevention and criminal policy as well as the current status, discussion, research and projects in crime prevention from different countries, Europe and the world. Drug Abuse
Presents the results of a number of epidemiologic studies designed to assess the extent of the drug abuse problem in the Americas and identify lines of preventive action. The book has two parts. The first is a multi-authored collection of studies focused on the epidemiologic characteristics of the drug abuse epidemic. Studies fall into three main groups. The first provides a sample of current research designed to gauge the extent of the drug abuse problem and determine why governments are so often unprepared to respond in effective ways. The second group explores methodologies used in drug abuse research and points out the necessity of developing alternative epidemiologic surveillance systems. Papers in the third group, which considers the evaluation of preventive programmes, attempt to determine which preventive strategies are most effective and to which groups they should be directed.
