Sephardi, Jewish, Argentine

“A much-needed monograph on the role of Sephardic Jews in Argentina, and . . . an important contribution to the study of Jews in Latin America overall” (Choice). At the turn of the twentieth century, Jews from North Africa and the Middle East were called Turcos (“Turks”). Seen as distinct from Ashkenazim, Sephardi Jews weren’t even identified as Jews. Yet the story of Sephardi Jewish identity has been deeply impactful on Jewish history across the world. Adriana M. Cocaine is big business and getting bigger. Governments spend millions on an unwinnable war against it, yet it's now the drug of choice in the West. How did the cocaine economy get so huge? Who keeps it running behind the scenes? In The Candy Machine Tom Feiling travels the trade routes from Colombia via Miami, Kingston and Tijuana to London and New York. He meets Medillin hitmen, US kingpins, Brazilian traffickers, and talks to soldiers and narcotics officers who fight the gangs and cartels. He traces cocaine's progress from legal 'pick-me-up' to luxury product to global commodity, looks at legalization programmes in countries such as Switzerland, and shows how America's anti-drugs crusade is actually increasing demand. Cutting through the myths about the white market, this is the story of cocaine as it's never been told before.

A historical analysis of the Argentinian Jewish community of Buenos Aires from its origins until 1930. Describes the first evidence of antisemitism expressed in the local press in 1881 against Jewish immigration from Russia. Some anti-Jewish stereotypes were incorporated by writers (e.g. in Julián Martel's novel "La bolsa", 1891). Later, as a consequence of actions and strikes carried out by the labor movements, especially by anarchists and socialists, a campaign was launched against foreigners. An attempt was made to control the curricula of Jewish schools. Jews were identified with subversion and radical tendencies such as anarchism. Discusses the "Semana Trágica" (January 1919), the first pogrom in Argentina.
